Computer Help

My g/f's computer is a piece...
I want to update the memory/ram
Its an IBM computer w/ a 300 mhz AMD processor
and 64 megs of ram
I want to update the ram... I think its SD ram.
The processor... whats the biggest I can get in that serious?
I know nothing about AMD
and I havent had a computer apart in quite a while
but I just cant deal w/ her having that slow of a PC
what do you suggest?
I can get 128 of SDram from a friend for free....
just need a processor...
Any suggestions on what will fit, and whats "cheap"
I do check out "pricewatch.com" and "newegg.com"
So i do know about the discount stores

Check out the PC club Andy. You would probably be better off getting a new motherboard. Or maybe a complete computer. That way it would come with Windows XP and a warrenty. http://www.pcclub.com/

Now days it's easier to upgrade to the newer technology...
especially if you're talking about a TRUE IBM not a compatible or clone...
and really... throwing memory and other stuff at a slow computer will only make it marginally faster...
the motherboard and data paths are still SLOW...
get a whole new box - typically you can use the monitor - keyboard -printer you have ...
And if not the latest - get the previous generation for a LOT less...

Im not buying her a new one... She likes this PC and just wants it a bit faster
Its fast enough for her, except loading pages and such
and thats not her internet connection
I just want to know the fastest AMD i can fit in a 300 mhz slot....
I can get one for less than 100 bucks, and it'll work great for her
I dont want to buy her a new PC because we are moving in together soon and I have a fast enough PC (6 months old)
and then her PC I will be giving to my brother for school reports

New computers for $39 minus processor and memory (same stuff you need anyway).

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...c.asp?CatId=31

You would have to contact the manufacturer (IBM) to see if you model of motherboard is upgradable and by how much.

I think everyone is trying to tell you something- that your gain will not be what you might be expecting for the $$$$ and hassle.

Oh well.
Thanks for the help
Just wondering if any of you knew what "class" would fit in that same hole
Im not replacing anything but the ram/processor.
Not worth my money. I can prob find a faster processor for free (buddy has tons of used PCs from yardsales) So I was looking for under 50 bucks... maybe 100
Thanks for the info once again, Im just not looking for another PC

The processor is a socket 7, but you will need the manual to see what the motherboard can handle. the sdram may not fit because the older computers took tke 72 pin ram and sdram is 168 pin. If I wre you I would check out www.computergeeks.com if she likes whats on the computer just move the hard drive to another computer, you can get one 3 times as fast for around $100.

What ram the 72 pin?
I'll check out the site...
Thanks for the info on the socket 7 I'll see what the motherboard can handle.
I dont really feel like swapping anything out but a processor and ram
Its very simple
to be honest, just that much is more than the computer is worth to me, but shed like it done for cheap, and i think i can do it for free. Just needed info. haha
Thanks again

One reason its probably running slow is the fact you put Xp on a machine with an old AMD processor with only 64megs of ram. That's pretty far below Microcruds recommended specs for Winblows XP. Try putting another OS, like 2000 on it and get that 128 megs from your friend. Either of those should help.

The fastest AMD K-6 series processor is 550 mhz. Having had both a 300 and a 550, I'd take the 550 if it's cheap but you won't see enough difference to go buy one for more than $10-15. eBay probably the best place to look. You will need to know if the motherboard can run that speed, it won't hurt to run the CPU at less than its rated speed but it makes it sort of pointless to use it. I run Win2K on a 550 with 256mb RAM and it does fine. I worked on a friend's HP with a K6-550 and XP, with 64mb RAM it made my old 486s seem quick but kicking it up to 256 made it pretty decent. XP supposedly will run on 128 but it's cruddy.

There's two flavors of K6-300--one runs a 66mhz bus*4.5, the other 300 ran a 100mhz bus*3. I've worked on a couple IBMs of that age, K6s around 266-300mhz, and they both had SDRAM, and IIRC could jumper up to either 450 or 500. Look on the motherboard for two blocks of jumpers: one will probably be numbered 60-66-75 or something similar, that's the bus speed setting. The other will be 3-3.5-4-4.5-5. That's the multiplier.

Just cleaning up the machine, removing spyware, defrag, make some performance settings, and get rid of IE etc will make big improvements. A new processor is probably a waste. Some of those old processors are high $$ now.

W98 SE may run faster than XP.
