I recently bought a 99 Explorer Sport with 28k miles. I noticed a terrible rattle at cold start-up, and eventually had the cam belt tensioner replaced by the local Ford garage. Problem is, I still hear a very slight rattle (valve-train?) noise at cold start-up. If I restart a warm engine, the noise is totally gone. It does not seem to be very severe, but is it something I should have looked at? Should the sound of the engine starting be any different cold than warm...ever?
When did you have the cam tensioners replaced? If it was before October 2000, Ford redesigned the parts again. So far the latest version has kept my SOHC quite now for the last 25K miles.
Hi...Have a '99 Sport as well with 31,000km.I had the recall done last month and things have been a lot quieter although I have heard the odd noise at cold startup a few times as well...just curious...how long did your recall take to complete? Mine was done in four hours( or less)...with no real visible signs under the hood that anything had been touched!...just wondering....
To Dave 44:
The reciept said 1.8 hours for that particular job. They called me about 4 hours after I dropped it off.
I am taking it back in next week for the more minor noise. Seems to me that a modern engine should not sound differently when it's started cold than when it's been running recently. I live in WI and figure it may become more pronounced as the weather gets colder.
I'll let you know what they say about that noise.
Also, they found that the seepage around the front differential houseing I complained about was a leaking front pinion seal that had to be replaced (0.7hours). Just fyi.
I had the same noise on my '00 (bought it with 24K). After a month and a half (6000 miles later) the noise was starting to come back. The dealer traded me out into a V8 model for nothing. I figured with the amount of miles that I drive, the engine wasn't designed to have the front end of it pulled apart that frequently. Just a thought.
No it was not a recall. It was an Owner Notification Program (ONP). Meaning that if your dealer couldn't verify the problem, they wouldn't replace them. A recall is something that is usually mandated by the NHTSA which means that the manufacturer has to replace the part whether it is bad or not.
It is listed as:
TSB# 00M12 Recall - Camshaft Chain Tensioner & Intake Gasket
at http://www.alldata.com/TSB/20/992015DC.html
The slight noise/rattle at cold startup that I am still hearing is supposed to be normal.
Now, I am hearing a whistle/squeel from the front of the vehicle. Looks like TSB# 01-11-4 (Front Axle - Squealing/Whistling Noise)may apply. It is mainly in colder weather (and I am in WI), so we'll see if they take care of the problem. Thank goodness it is still under warrenty.
I would say that is an error on the part of Alldata. After reading all of the dealer letters, and instructions and owner letter nothing in them mentions that it is a recall. The only thing they say is that if the dealer verifies the problem, they will replace the tenioners and the intake manifold o-rings at no charge to the customer. If someone goes into their dealer and tries to get them to replace the tensioners and o-rings without the dealer being able to verify that one or the other is bad they will be disappointed. Incidentally, the labor allowance is 1.8 hours and from what I've seen the parts aren't too expensive. Before the bulletin, most people seem to be paying in the $300 range.
the cam tensioner recall HAS been updated twice, the tensioner's themselves were not updated twice , but the intake gaskets were.from green gaskets to black.you can tell a revised tensioner by looking just slightly to the right of the t-stat housing,if your tensioner is flat,it must be replaced.FORD has also released a new tsb stating the cold start noise is normal, and poses no long term damage to engine, believe it.
What does this noise sound like? When my starts up, it almost sounds like a dieseling noise from the front of the engine. It sounds like a rattling kind of deal (had a catlytic converter heat sheild rattle on another car that sounded similar but from a different place).
If Ford can verify the problem you mentioned above, will they replace the thing even if the truck is off warranty?
Thanks! I just found this site today and it ROCKS!!!
