bronco II problemos

well yesterday i go out to start my B2 and click, nothing, won't turn over. just makes a dead-battery-like noise and the lights dim. i figure its probably the battery, so i get my father, get it moving, have him pop the clutch and i figure ill just leave it running for a while, should be okay.

after a few minutes i pull away, i get a few blocks away and the lights start flickering every so slightly. i take off from a light and clunk, off goes the engine, lights everything.

long story short, thought it was the alternator, changed it, charged it, still won't start.

anyone have any idea on what this could be? starter? would a dead starter make a car stall and cut out power entirely like that? did the dead alternator just kill the battery beyond recharge?

thanks.

p.s. also need an answer on this. bought the alternator and its got a different wheel from the old one, one for like a wide belt. my tiny little chain-like-belt seems to work fine on it, but will this cause problems over time?

thanks again.

Im curious on this as well.
I recently had a dead battery, so I hooked up my parents battery to my truck. I had the jumpers going directly to my batt. cables, without my battery hooked up, and it would do nothing more than make the solinoid click. I changed the solenoid. Same thing happened. Had the starter checked, and it was on it's last leg, so I put a new starter in. Same thing happened, it just clicked at the solenoid. Eventualy I put a new battery in it and it started.

Anyways, since then- a few times I have been driving (it happens when I am slowing down to a stop, or starting from a stop) the power will go out, and it will die. All I have to do it hit the starter once and it will fire right up (when it's moving).

a few months back i had the same problem, it was weird, i didnt know why it acted that way, but my uncle figured it to be the starter so he changed it out, and everything worked fine, and still does, i recently put in a new battery because it's been needing one and the only problem i have now is i cant get my headlights straightened or w/e i have one that's overshooting the other one and cant figure out how to make it go down a little, anyways if anyone could help on that, i would appreciate it.. thanks

I have reason to believe there is something wring in my steering column, electric wise.

I took her out for as spin just now, and as I was getting in my knee hit the steering column (it was already running) and it died like it does. So I got to messing with it, finding different things that make it die. if I smack the steering column it will die, if I touch the keyswitch and make it move even a tiny bit it dies. When I use the blinker it kills the electric (dont know if it makes it die, but I assume so).

Does yours do this Aleahey?

Anyone know what causes/fixes this?

i had the starting problem and figured it to be the starter and the alternator, so i changed both and nothing, well come to find out my sillonoid was out...well it's been running fine since then

about the electrical problem...i've had trouble with my electrics ever since i found a wire running to ground on my alarm...i'd check all the wires, especially the ones running through the firewall and see if any of them have lost their insulation.

to tell you the truth i dont know. i can't get it running to find out, heh.

im really tossed, i already installed an alternator i didn't need. now im trying to figure out what to do next. im thinking ill give the battery a shot, try to replace it, because a dead starter shouldn't cause a car to stall. once the car is running, it should be out of play. ive known dead batteries to shut a car down though.

is this theory sound? any opinions?

the theory is sound but have the battery tested at an auto-zone or something (somewhere free if possible), and if it's not the battery...check the silonoid

Don;t forget about bad battery cables, they corrode inside and you can't tell. If your alt. has a pulley for a serpentine belt it will not work properly with a V belt, it will slip and you won't charge properly.

new wire, new solenoid, nothing. no power whatsoever, no dome light, no headlights, no starter.

where the wire goes to the solenoid, any particuliar order you should put the metal loop wire end deals in? like positive batt first, other things on top, or positive on top with a washer?

Start with putting a volt meter on the battery to determine if you have power there.

ok, make sure you have the solenoid hooked up correctly, When I got mine it didn't have any markings on the posts to tell you which posts to put the wires on. Just try switching them, it probably wont fix your problem, but you never know. Also, make sure you have the starter thing on the 'S' post in the solenoid, instead of the 'I'.

Have you searched older posts about starting issues? I remember reading an old post about starting problems, and it had something to do with a wire going to the trans (although I dont think they had a complete lack of electricity).
