Hi I Have A 55 Ford Panel Truck That I Have Installed Power Brakes In And Now The Gas Tank (side Mount) Wont Fit Because Of Brake Booster, So I Have Decided To Install A New Tank In The Rear Of The Truck (between The Frame Rails) Then Put A Door On The Side Above The Rear Fender. So I Need To Know What Tank Is Good To Use For This As I Need The Filler At The Top Of The Tank. Any Help Would Be Greatly Appreciated. I Also Added A 9" Ford Rear End And A Cordoba Front End On The Truck. Thanks To This Forum I Learned Of The Cordoba Swap And Let Me Tell You ...it Was A Piece Of Cake Just Like You Guys Said. Thanks,
Mike
There are lots of threads here on moving fuel tanks back to the frame rails. I'd use the FTE search function and you'll be amazed at what it turns up.
Here is a quick summary of what I know. The 65-68 Mustang tanks are cheap (about $120 from tons of suppliers), fit between the frame rails, and many people use them. I think installation requires moving the rear crossmember. The problem with these tanks is the filler hole is on top at the center rear of the tank...meaning you normally have to refuel through the bed. I don't know how this would work with a panel.
A more expensive option are the custom made tanks, but you can get the filler installed wherever you want it.
Top of the line are the racing fuel cells...many of which are made to fit the same old Mustangs. These things are about $800 and up, but as safe as you can get.
Do that search and you'll get much more detailed information.
Another excellent candidate is a 1957-1958 Ford Passenger gas tank. Ford part number B7A9002B, $199 at gastanks.com. It is 20 gallon, mount between the rails (with some room to spare) and has a high rise side fill (driver side) that should hit the panel above the rear fender perfectly. I'm planning on using this one on my 56 Effie.

One thing I found out about using the Ch$%y tank is that Auto Meter's Artic WHite gauges will work with the stock fuel sending unit. SO there is no need to try to get the aftermarket sending unit to work. I also talked to TPI tech and there gauges will work with the stock GM sending unit. I plan to pick up a 6 piece set this weekend in Louisville at the Street Rod Nationals

Randy Jack I know this is from the early days of the site but what changed your mind about using the car tank? You ended up with a 78 Ford Van tank correct? Just curious as I bench/dream build the 56' cab I have . Thanks

I had forgotten about this thread and my response. I forget why I didn't use the car tank. It was a good candidate. I definitely wanted a side fill instead of thru the bed, like with a Mustang tank.
I wound up using a 25 gallon 78 Bronco tank. It has the side fill I wanted and good volume. I am very pleased with the install. I have been using it for about five years now. The fill angle and built-in vent work very well.
