for a do-it-yourself tune up you should should include new plugs (if the current plugs need replacing), gapping the plugs, new wires,inspection/replacement of fuel injectors, replace the air filter, radiator flush, tranny flush, diff flush, sensor inspection (fuel, air, tranny, O2, cooling, etc), and while you're at it change the oil and oil filter, rotate/balance your tires, check exhaust system for leaks, and inspect your brakes. There are tons of other things you can do while you're doing a tune up, these are the most routine ones however. Good Luck.
Which engine does your Explorer have in it ? Your best bet is to purchase a repair manual for your Explorer . I like the Alldata online manuals or you should be able to purchase the factory repair manuals from Helm . Your owners manual should have a maintenance schedule in it , decide what service schedule you need , Normal or Severe . Its likely your engine has platinum tip spark plugs that should not be gapped . The Motorcraft plugs will be pregapped & no further adjustment is needed . Things like spark plug wires last longer , unless you find a problem with them then replacing them is a waste of time & money . Fuel injectors do not need to be replaced unless they have failed , inpspecting them , Well , unless there is some reason to suspect they are not operating , looking at them is about all you can do . Base your maintenance on the schedule & your driving habits .
