I have a 95 explorer that will sometimes not start,I turn the key and nothing. The only way to get it to start is either pumping the gas peddle a few times or turn on the headlights and then turn the key. It doesn't happen all the time it has been going on about a year, it has never stranded me anywhere but it is very annoying. The dealer has not been able to find anything wrong, if anyone has any ideas of what to look for, I would really appreciate it.
My 95 explorer also has starting. My symptoms are- if you turn the key on the car won't start until the fuel pump stops; typically the fuel pump should only go on for a few seconds and stop; when mine acts up it can be a minute, or more, and has taken up to 6 minutes to turn off. Once the pump turns off it starts! The dealer can't find it. I suggest you try this out and see if yours is the same, if so let me know. I did post this problem a couple of months back asProfanity Removed; the consensus was the computer is bad.
let me know,
Bill
I checked the fuel pump, it doesn't run any longer than it is supposed to. Any suggestions on anything else to check? Could it be electrical because sometimes I can start it by turning on the lights.
Can the dealer just not get it not to work or what? It should be a rather easy problem to find when it won't start. I can't think of any reason the turning on the headlights or pumping the gas pedal should do anything. Some possible causes would be starter motor, ignition switch, starter relay, or starter solonoid. The first thing I'd check would be the starter relay. Can you hear it click when you turn the key to start? After you check for that it's time to break out the volt meter and have someone hold the key in the start postion while you check to see where you have power and where you don't. Again starting at the starter relay is probably your best bet so you know if you should work your way down to the starter or back to the ignition switch. Have fun and good luck.
I have a similar problem with my 94 Explorer. I found that I can start it eventually by switching it back and forth between Drive and Neutral. Of course, it never fails when it's at the Dealer's shop. Sometimes I do hear a humming noise like a solenoid or something is moving. Could that be the fuel pump?
Does this problem only occur on say, the first time you start it in the morning, or after its been sitting for a while? or is this an every time you start it sort of thing?
