Dead Radio

My 1995 Eddie Bauer Explorer with Luxury Sound radio died, no lights, no sound, no nothing. The radio has cassette player and CD changer controls with CD changer in the high-rise console. I verified both fuses were good. I pulled the unit and had 12 volts on both radio feed and memory feed wires. Next I pulled the top and bottom off the unit and found no damage or loose connections. I plugged the unit back in and confirmed voltage at multiple locations on the main board and it felt like it warmed up, but still nothing. I concluded the processor must be bad on the board.

I bought a new replacement from www.radiosandmore.com, good folks. I plugged it in yesterday and nothing. It must not be the radio unit. The radio only uses 5 small wires (maybe 16 gauge) as output/input. It doesn't even have the antenna coax plugged into it. Is there another main unit I should be looking for? I know there's an amp in the rear passenger quarter but I figured it can only affect the output from the radio unit, not any display or control function.

Any ideas??

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-Nov-01 AT 04:19 PM (EST)]It's your amp. The amp is located in the back quarter panel, where your subwoofer is. Your receiver is only a keyboard and display with a cassette player, that's all. The amp in the back is the actual "brain" of the system. I wish you luck finding a new amp. An alternative way is to get an aftermarket cd player. That should save you a couple of bucks.

Billy you were right. The rear control unit is the brains of the system and it was bad. The folks at radiosandmore.com took care of me. I sent them my old front control unit and rear control unit and they sent back a refurbed rear control unit to go with the new front unit I had just purchased. Both units must be compatible, that is, have the same mods done to them. The lastest mods/revision is the "P3" mod.

I've got tunes back and spent less than $400.
