rattle rattle!!!

i've got a 4 speed manual trans. in my 771/2 f250 4x4 it is a reman. because my old one was too torn apart to be rebuilt. it's got about 7000 miles on it and i hear a funny rattling sound when i'm going from third to fourth gear. i dont have carpet in the truck so its pretty loud. it goes away when i get up to speed but i dont think im lugging the engine. i shift at between 40 and 45 mph. it has made the same noise in going from second to third but not as often. do i need to rev it higher before i shift? it sounds like 45 is about max for third. is this just linkage rattling because of vibration at certain speeds? or do i need to go back to the tranny shop and have something tightened? any help is much appreciated.

Hey matt, is this a NP 435 box? If it's a 435 and the input shaft end clearance is too much they will rattle some due to taper bearing. If it's a high mileage box the drive dogs and slider splines can be worn. Excess end play on the cluster will increase rattle, high mileage boxes with new thrust washers can still have excessive end clearance. This can be corrected by adding custom machined shims. Were all the bearings replaced as they will get loose. With the engine off, in 3rd and 4th gear with a wheel off the ground turn the output yoke back and forth, how much trans backlash do you have?
It's best to do this test with the trans input and output shafts with trans out for checking cores. You may have a high mileage reman. Hell i beat my 435 for 843,000 and it didn't rattle unless in 4th at 400 rpm (lug lug). Make the rebuilder exchange for a tighter box. My $.02, Carl...................................o&o>....... ............

matt77F2504x4, read the small print on the billing, they should have 12 months or 12,000 mile warranty. It's one of two things, one they are a production shop were you get a pig in a poke and they "slam bam" (low quality control) or two, you got some high mileage box that has a unkown history. The same thing happened with a friend in the trucking business (18 wheeler), he got a box thats worse and had gear wine over the old box that only needed bearings, over a million miles. He had no time to be down.
As I'm an licensed A&P i trust no one and do my own work. What box do you have? Carl.............................................. .............................................o&o>. .............

im having trouble finding my invoice from the rebuilder(aamco transmissions) they might be the production type of place like you said. i think its an np435, but maybe a t-18. where can i look on it to be sure? also, my truck is the later 77.

matt77F2504x4, i'm not familiar with the T-18, been stuck with 435's from day one with Fords. They (aamco clip shop) should have records on your rebuild as in when replaced and the warranty. It's a gamble with "production shops" for what you get verse a custom hand fitted, selected part shops. Get their copy of the repair with warranty then complain like hell. You didn't hear it from me but a friend had a used Bronco II that had rearend whine real bad, dealer put in 140 wt. oil, still whined, warranty almost up we sucked the oil out and went on a cruise. After 35 miles it welded, we added the 140 wt. oil and called for a tow. It was not repairable hence brand new replacement that had no whine. If they won't talk get a second opionion
if no action tell them about the BBB and small claims court.

matt77F2504x4, i forgot to tell you you should have a metal tag under the PTO cover bolts that tell the model of the box. Carl........................................o&o>.. .............
