Interior up grade

Pic of this are in my gallery 97 F150, South Carolina. and the part # for the behind the seat Ford storage unit is with its photo also.
Just installed a new molded carpet kit. It was a lot easier than expected.
I did pull off all my old sound proofing/padding from the stock carpet, since the new kit only had the padding in the front section. After pulling all the interior panels that had to come out. Tip: the buttons that hold the panels in have a detent in the center, only push them in a little and the button will come out. After removing the buttons push the center completely out, I then warmed (not cooked) the button with a lighter and rolled them in my fingers to get them back into orig. shape for easy reinstall. They work like a rivit.
I cleaned out a lot of dirt I didn't know was there. Installed the hardware so I could locate all holes that I would have to cut in the new carpet. Make sure you use a razor blade or scissor to cut new holes, carpet has a bad habit of twisting around threads on bolts and pulling the carpet out of sorts when reinstalling them. I laid out the old padding where it was originally and sprayed the top (only) with 3M adhesive spray. Carefully lay the new carpet kit in (do not spray adhesive on the new carpet yet). (Trimmed it and inch oversize all around.) I then left it over night so it could relax and conform.
The next morning I made any last adjustments then lifted the carpet over the padding areas and sprayed the carpet side with 3M adhesive spray, touch it to the padding, pull apart then press it back down again (allows it to gas out and stick better). Do not trim yet. Save the final trim when you Re-install the seats. This is where you may or may not have some of the slack in the carpet pull up (just a little bit) That is why you wait to do the final trim. Its hard to add on what you already cut off. You can spray glue on any problem area that doesn't look like it is laying as snug as you like and trim to fit. NOTE: I did not reinstal the seats until I finished the rest of the interior.
Since I was going a few shades darker carpet than stock I had to do the doors also. To get the old carpet out of the insets. I recommend using a "hot blade". It is a tool that looks like a wood burner with the exception that it has an end to mount a razor blade to. It plugs in and gets pretty hot. Anyway...once you have an edge of the inset carpet pulled you will touch the blade to the glue points as you slowly pull it away from the door panel. This works great and keeps you from deforming the old carpet panel so you can use it for a pattern. Not to mention it is almost impossible to get the carpet off with out the tool. You will notice that it was glued by computer and heat. The new carpet installs easy. Spray the door inset with the 3M and the pre cut carpet with 3M adhesive. Wait a minute, press them together and pull apart and press back together, wa-la.
I also did my back wall panel as well. Recover this while out of the truck. Now the fuzzy covering does not come off on that. Also I removed the tacky storage sleeve attached to the wall and threw it out. But if you keep it remove it carefully and pull off the old covering if you are going to recover it also. You have to spray the back fuzzy wall panel fairly heavy with 3M but not soaking. and the new carpet, and do as before press together pull back and press together (remember it has to gas out for a second).
Last but not least I installed the Ford utility bin behind the seat storage unit. (lts great). You will have to drill into the floor to mount it. I did not add the middle mount myself as it was impossible to get to under the truck. The two end mounts will come through the bottom of the truck under the frame, but there is access holes in the frame to get to the bolts. But BEFORE you drill ANYTHING look under the truck where it is going to come through just to make sure there is NOTHING you will drill into that will ruin your day. I used flat washers and rubberwasher under the truck to keep out nasties as well as rubber washer inside the truck against the metal. You may find, like I did that the unit didn't set flush with the back wall in the middle. I solved this by gluing carpet along the under side in the front of the unit, acts like a shim,(not visible when installed), Then just to dress it up I cut and laid carpet inside the storage unit.
Hope if anyone out there is thinking of doing some interior up grades this helps. It is really an easy job and makes a 100% difference if you have carpet that is getting tired. The carpet kit I installed ran me about 114 bucks from Stock Interiors and the storage bin was 156.22 from Ford (prices without taxes).
