93 Explorer possible timing chain problem? Clanking sound
I started up my 93 Explorer after a day of skiing and all was well. Down the road I heard a clanking sound, felt a loss of power and noticed that the oil pressure was at zero. I pulled over and shut down the engine. I checked under the hood and oil and water levels were normal. I tried restarting and it fired up with normal oil pressure. The clanking sound stayed. Drove thirty miles home with intermitent clanking and intermitent spikes on the temperature guage. The oil pressure stayed steady throughout the trip home. The sound appears to be coming from the front of the engine. The motor continues to run smooth other than the clatter. The vehicle has 150,000 miles and has been maintained well. It has always run perfectly...until now.
I think this could be the timing chain having stretched, although I don't understand the initial low oil pressure. Think the timing chain would spike the temperature guage? Anyone have ideas? How long do the Explorer timing chains last?
