i just got a new fuel filter, got the wrench, and will be replacing it this afternoon. i've heard people say that u should relieve the pressure in the fuel lines before pulling the filter off. how would i go about doing so? i know my fair share about pickups, but not too familiar with the fuel system on my ford. thanx a bunch.
Locate and tap the side of the fuel pump shutoff switch, the red button will pop up. Restart the truck and let it run until it starves out and dies for lack of fuel.
Location of the switch depends on the year, some are to the left and above the brake pedal, on the firewall.
When the repair is complete reset it by pressing the red button on the same switch.
Even after you do what Huntsman said there will still be a little bit of pressure in the lines so make sure you hold a rag over the filter when you remove the lines.
For some reason Ford calls the inertia switch many different things in different manuals. Inertia Safety Switch, Fuel Shutoff Switch, Fuel Safety Switch and probably a couple other names ... if not consitant they can be resourceful. Check your manual index until you find something that looks like that and it will direct you (generally at least) to the location.
If you don't have a manual, get one. Ford parts can direct you where you can order them.
i looked in the manual and it said something like "under the instrument panel, behind the dash trim"? something similar. so i looked under the dash, and could not find it, looked under the hood and could not find it. EPNCSU...the relay sounds like a good idea...perhaps ill do that if i cant find the switch...
Pull the relay and change the filter but keep looking for the switch. If you bump something and cause it to cut off the fuel, you'll then be looking for it on the side of the road or in the parking lot at the Mall.
I had an experience onetime where I had to have an '85 T-Bird hauled home because I couldn't find that darn switch. The manual said in the trunk on the right side ... couldn't find it. Checked the service manual I had in the trunk and it said in the trunk on the left side ... nothing there either. I ended up pulling out all the liners, laying on my back inside the trunk tracing wires until I found it. It was behind the liner without an access hole!!
Clyde's is on the firewall just above where the passenger would put the left foot. A lot of truck switches are mounted behind the side kick panel on the left side. Yah, you need to know where it is ... just in case!
Good luck with the hunt and let us know if and where you find it.
havent looked for it much yet. pulled the relay, crawled underneith, and couldnt get the filter off. dinked with it for like 20 minutes, then gave up. i dont have too much patience if ya noticed...
its a 95 F-150 with the 5.8L...is there anywhere else i should look for the switch? thanx guys!
Checked a '95 sitting out back. The kick panel on the passenger side has a "notch" on the top edge, just in from where the panel meets the door opening. If you run your finger straight in behind the panel you'll encounter a little flat box with a tube on top. Putting your finger into that tube puts you in touch with the reset button.
thanx guys for all the info! ill have to look for the button again tomorrow.
i was drivin my pickup the other day, and it died, so i replaced the filter...after awhile i figured maybe the computer got messed up, so i disconnected the battery for a bit. after that, it ran for quite awhile. now today i pulled up our driveway, and it died again, so i pulled the battery cable off, and it ran fine again. im presuming it must be something in the computer or electronic if it runs fine after resetting it. kinda blows...my luck itll be kind of expensive too.
