I have a 79 bronco with a 351m that has done 47,000 mile, the only mods are a four barrel valley cover and 400 holley carby, I've bolted on a 600 and 750 holley but found the 400 to work best at the moment, and at its best it a slug.
I also have a 76 f100 with a stock 351 clevlo with FMX auto 4.11 gears and a 79 f100 with a stock 302 clevo with a C4 auto 3.0 gears all have 31 inch tyers.
both the f100's run rings around the bronco.
So I want more out of the bronco !!!!!
I have been looking at all the posts on 302 closed chamber ( Aussie heads )
for over a week now but have not seen a post were someone has bolted a set on there stock 351m.
First I'd like to hear if someone has done this and what differents it made good or bad.
Second if no one has bolted a set on the 351m I'm willing to give it a try, for the sake a couple of gaskets and a half day locked in the shed.
A couple of mates of mine are big on drag racing, when I said I had 351m they said boat anker, now I have shown them all the info I could fine they want to see what they can get out of her.
He may have problems when the heads are refinished and increase compression without a radical cam. Check and see if you still have the OEM plastic timing set. If you do replace it with an aftermarket chain set straight up. The OEM setup was set for 4 degrees retard timing and wear has increased that a lot. It should wake that engine up and replace a failing part. Kind of getting two birds at once!
Thanks for that bit of info, I hadn't thought about the timing chain, I'll put that on the list, this is going to be a bit of trial and error (not to much error I hope)
We are going to be useing good second hand parts at the monent, my drag race mates have a good selection and all they ever use are cleveland motors.
when we get the right combo I'll invest in all new gear.
can any one tell me what the cc rating is of dish in the stock 351m piston, and if a stall coverter is the same for a 351m and a 351c to bolt on to a C6 auto.
Just tought I'd let you all know that I've finely found a good set of 302 aussie heads to bolt on to the 351m, so we will be bolting them on mid to late next week.
I'll keep you all posted.
DSC usually has them and you can usually find a set on ebay. If there isn't a set there now keep checking back, within a week or so you should see some.
The 302 closed chamber Aussie heads are on, and now I have 79 bronco that will do bettween 95 to 100 MPH .
We fitted the heads wedensday it was a full days work in the end but worth it.they fitted hole for hole.
when we removed the old stock heads they were in good condition as was the pistons and bore, as they should be the bronco has only done 48,000 miles.
We tured the motor over to top dead center and mesured how far the top of the piston was from the top of the bore and had fifty thow, we added that to the 13cc dish in the piston and the 58cc chamber in the head and worked out that we would have about 9.2 to 1 compression. ( I would have liked about 9.5 to 1 )
When we started her up and set the timimg I was straight out on the road it started pinging its *** of, so we removed the vac advance hose off of the dissy set the timing at 12 deg and no matter how hard you push pedal the pining was gone. and if I had enuff road I believe she would break the 100 mph the speedo reached 95mph and it was still gaining speed.
That is with a 390 holley carb and stock cam which is next on the list of things to do.
The tune of American 351M and 400 engines was designed to reduce NOx emissions. EGR was a big part of that, along with the retarded timing chain. It sounds like you already ran into the issue with the huge vacuum advance on these engines.
I'd try searching for a distributor from a 70 or 71 400 or 429. The vacuum advance on those won't be set up to work with EGR because they didn't use EGR back then.
The cam timing is pretty important. If the sprockets are good, get a new timing chain and search for an offset key or a sprocket or ? to get the cam timing moved back up.
The carbs on post 1973 351M and 400's were tuned rich. Again, a 1970 or 1971 400 carb would help.
You don't have to change out the distributor, you can ger a kit from Crane that gives you a different set of springs for the mechanical advance in the dist and an adjustable vacuum canister to fine tune it. I think it runs around $30. http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/TechSer.../FMCTech3.html. You can see from this link that you need more carb and intake ability. What you have on there is probably beginning to wheeze by 4000 rpm or sooner.
