These jacks are rated at 2,4,6,8 and 10 tons. Can a 8 ton jack really lift 16,000 lbs. safely? Is there any way to determine how much can be safely lifted with one of these jacks?
When you cant take the supplied handle and pump it anymore you know its had it,,, ha, 16,ooo I would want a 20 tonner, realistically about a third of the rating.
Well, if they rate them the same as jack stands, then the 8 ton would be able to lift 16 tons. I'm not saying for sure though. Just because the handle is getting hard to pump doesn't mean you're getting close to the max. There's supposed to be a relief valve in there so you don't overdo it.
There is a relief valve set for the max pressure in the jack that corresponds to it's rating. When you reach the max rating pressure pumping the handle will just not do anything. It will still take force tho and even putting an extension on will not raise the load any more.
Jacks run on a very simple F = P x A where:
F = Force in tons or pounds etc.
P = Pressure in the ram chamber.
A = Area of the ram.
This is similar to a hydraulic cylinder but you use the area of the piston for A on extension with the (piston area - the rod area) = A for return.
Yes, the jacks can lift their rated loads safely but you must stabilize the load.
