horn issue

i have a 79 f 150. my dad unhooked the horn years ago because it stays on. would a new horn solve the problem or is it something else. my pickup does not have cruise control so going by what i have heard i should not have a relay correct?

Usually, a stuck horn is a sign of the horn cicuit going to ground in the column. I would check under the center cover of the steering wheel and unhook the wheel switch and see if the horn still blows.

it does not blow when i unhook it. the steering wheel is an old aftermarket steering wheel. the cover does not fit tight and i messed with it and i can get it to go on and off but it seems like there is something missing because it does not always disengage and shut off. is there supposed to be some sort of spring or something in there and how tight should the 3 bolts be that hold the wheel switch on?

does anyone know if there is supposed to be a spring in it. i think it is (well it looks just like) the grant 3 spoke chrome wheel with foam grip and the holes in the 3 spokes.

Yes, the spring sits on the stud above the large nut and pushes the button up away from the column.

I have the same wheel on mine. The three bolts should be tight, but the horn ring should be able to slide on the bolts. Then the spring goes on the stud and pushes against the horn button which snaps around the horn ring - so the spring tension keeps the horn ring off the wheel except when you press it.

Most parts store that sell Grant wheels can get you a horn kit. It comes with all the parts you need to make a horn work with your wheel. Might look into that to get the correct parts...
