I'm looking at getting a "power enhancer" for my truck, and I'm looking at a flip chip with 4 settings: stock, 50hp, 75hp and 110hp. I like the set up and the price, but I talked to a local diesel guy that sells performance chips and programmers and he has a Diablo Predator with the 40hp, 65hp, 80hp, 100hp and high altitude tunes for about the same price. He told me that the flip chips can burn up the computer because of the instantaneous change in the program, which I can see making sense but didn't know if anybody has had this happen to them or has heard of this? I don't know if I should worry about that or not???
I like the Predator because it has the hand held to read codes, but the flip chip could be more fun. Any input or advice is greatly appreciated!!
Here is what I posted not too long ago about the Diablo Sport Delta Chip.
With your airflow and tranny enhancements, this should be okay for you. But you should get an EGT gauge if you don't already have one.
just my opinion' I went with thr chip and switch. That way I can set it according to my situation. If I go somewhere empty and bring back a full load I don't have to stop and reprogram or wish I had I like options thats all
Hey Farmboy - what's up? Well I have both a tuner and a flip chip - so I'll give ya my $.02! I got the tuner first and really liked it other than the waiting to change tunes hassle. After a couple months I decided to up-grade to a flip chip but kept the tuner for the code reading ability. I must say that I would/could never go back to the tuner for power - the chip definitely gave me more power and it is just so easy to reach down and twist that little switch vs. the wait 5 minutes routine. SO - basically I probably didn't help you at all - but that's my experience. I guess I would say go for a flip chip and convince one of your buddies to get a tuner.
i have only had flip chips(3 pos and now a 4 pos) i could never imagin not being able to swith power settings instantly to suit my situation. my chip has a stock,+50,+75+125 hp setting, i usally use the 50hp setting but if i am going to dinner with the wife and friends i can flip it to stock and get nice smooth shifts and the torque converter does not lock up, or if i am towing and temps are a little to hot i can just click it down. but most imprortantly if i pull up to a spotlight and a dura crap pulls next to me i know i will have the horsepower i need. as far as it frying the computer i have had a flip chip for 2 1/2 years and my computer is fine nor have i heard of any computers getting cooked.
ps. we have to do emmissions tests on our diesels here in colorado so i can bring it in, flip to stock, pass the test, and flip it right back up when done
O yea - I have never ever heard of a chip frying a computer either, so I don't think that's an issue. I'm not sure how every chip switches but I always switch mine at idle or close to it - never when I am on the throttle - just to be safe. I'm pretty sure my brand says that you can switch under power but I would rather play it on the safe side!
Wlihntr - that sucks about the emissions test on diesels - what does that hold you to for mods??

right now it is a total particulate count so as long as you are not dumping alot of smoke you will be ok. the funny thing is one time i had it done, and my old chip was stuck in high output mode and i thought it was smoking a quite a bit but it passed, or maybe the guy passed me because i was expaining all the cool mods he could do to his powerstroke .
i am guessing i can do alot of mods and still pass as long as i have a stock setting on the chip
Hey, thanks alot guys. I just put Autometer Sport Comp gauges in, Pyro, tranny temp and boost. It's hard keeping the truck on the road cuz I'm watching my gauges all the time now.
I'm with wlihntr, I like the flip chip so that when I pull up to another truck, or more desirable, a rice burner on my right side, I can flip it to the high side and smoke 'em.
I was told that it only takes the tuner 15 seconds to change programs, which I didn't think was too bad. But I don't like the settings on the tuner. I don't want a bunch of settings I can't/won't be using.
I think I might go with the flip chip, and see if I can't find a real cheap used tuner on Ebay just to read the codes.
Thanks for all the input.
wilhntr - Ahh - well that's not too awful bad then for mods. I'd just have to roll in and blow some smoke out of the stacks and then flip the switch to stock and pull it in for the test just to mess with 'em!!

How's the stacks with the muffler sounding??? Is it as good or worse compared to it being straight piped?

Well - it's kind-of a 50/50 thing. It did knock down the helicopter noise in the cab a good bit - but it REALLY cut down on the turbo whissle too (NOT good) AND since it's not really a diesel muffler and only has really small perforations in the core I think it is already starting to get a little louder from soot clogging. BUT for a $35 muffler - it did what I wanted it to - it made driving with the cruise set at 75mph for a couple hours possible without earplugs in! I am actually about to head out to my shop to go pull the muffler off, and put the straight pipe back on, and save it for vacation next year.
