tips to pass emissions tests?

My uncle has had my F-250 witha 5.0 pass emissions before when he owned it, but he did it in a shop that he knew the owner and stuff, what should i do to make sure it passes, i have hollowed cats. i heard stuff like revving the engine at a specific rpm and that burns the junk out? any ideas?

Make sure you change the oil before you go in. Also, make sure you have a clean air filter. Take the truck for a 10 minute run to make sure it is warmed up right before the test. You should be fine if the truck runs well and isn't smoking at all. Good luck!

no smoke, runs very good. it had a crate motor put in 5K miles ago. If i put a K an N filter, or other high flowfilter would that help? i will be registering it for the first time in a few months, and now it has no isurance or anything, how would i go about moving it to get oil changes and suff? i would do it myself but i have no place to put old oil!

Well, I would just use a regular air filter but that is just my opinion. As far as getting it taken somewhere, in Ontario Canada (where I live) you can get a 10 day temporary permit. But you also have to show them proof of insurance. Then you can drive around for 10 days and do what needs to be done (oil change, safety, emissions test).

If you feel up for it, you can change your own oil though. Drain the old oil into an oil drain pan then dump in your new oil after you put on a new filter. Then get your old oil and put it in the used oil jug and take it to a Jiffy Lube or something like that. Good luck!

In many states, parts suppliers that sell motor oil are required by law to take back used oil. When you buy the oil, keep the receipt--some won't want to be bothered by it...

You can even bring your used oil to a gas station that does repairs. They will take it.

If you know your way around mechanically, the most common emissions fail I see out here is a sticking EGR valve. Most don't need replacment, just a good cleaning to get the carbon ring that forms off.

New plugs etc that are part of a normal tune up can only help if you want to make sure you pass the first time but the emissions standards for older trucks usually are fairly lenient. Out here, my 86 is allowed almost twice as much "junk" as my newer 94 car.

Good Luck,

Lee
