Hi all,
How easy is it to change a power window motor on a 1990 F150?
If anyone has details or what I should watch out for when I am doing It, I would appreicate the help.
in order to get the old motor out you will have to drill some holes in inner door panel to get to the bolts or take it out as an assembly, replace motor and reinstall. at least that was the way it was on my 93 F150
It's not too bad. Like Crewchief said, you need to drill two holes. Once you get the panel off and the plastic out of the way, look at the lower front of the door. You can see one of the 8mm bolts that holds the motor to the regulator. The other two bolts are located by two "dimples" in the door metal. Use a largish drill bit and drill out the dimples. A bigger hole than you might guess is needed because the bolts are never quite exactly lined up with the dimples. Use a stick (or a friend) to hold the glass up, unplug the motor, and unbolt the motor. Reverse to install the motor. The glass doesn't have to be in any particular position but you might have to wiggle it up and down a bit for the motor to seat all the way in. That's about it.
What bothers me is that if Ford thought to put the indicating dimples there, why the heck didn't they just go ahead and punch two holes instead?
I agree it would make the job a little easier. i took mine out as an assembly so it wasnt too bad. the trick was too snake the assembly in and out. i really wonder how some of these engineers get paid for their ideas that really suck.
Mine just stops working after its been sitting in the sun for a few hours. If I take the door panel off and give the motor a smack with a pipe it will start working again. I have put up with it for 2 years now, I think I will replace it
Here is my response to a similar post not too long ago:

In my case, the motor was still good, it was the plastic gears that were bad--it worked like new after replacing the gears.
I replaced all of the door Panel Retainers before I put the door panel back on because even the ones that weren't broken were stiff and brittle. The generic ones for Ford/Dodge/Chevy worked fine even though they were slightly different lengths (it was all they had in stock).
When I was putting the door panel back on, I had to raise the interior door handle to the up/open position, and I had to pay special attention to make sure the door lock ***** didn't get wedged against the underside of the door panel.
The first parts store I tried didn't have the motor or the gears in stock. The second said they had both, so I bought a new motor, which included the gears. The motor they sold me didn't fit, it looked different, and had a completely different bolt patern, so I took it back and just bought the new gears.
Replacing the plastic gears, which had pretty much disintegrated worked just fine.
1st, there is a difference in the gear kit (not sure about the motor) according to date of manufacturer. I replaced mine (92F-150) and the I had to tell them whether it was manufacutered before or after May 1st of 92 .
The help on this post made my replacement an enjoyable 1 hour to replace the gear on both windows..
One tip though, make sure you have a strong magnet you can fish down in the door to retrieve the one or two bolts you will almost surely drop. A magnetic 5/16 socket really helps to...
Well, i did the job like 2 days ago. not as hard as i thought. man, when i opened the gear cap/top all these broken plastic things fell out. they were the worn out plastic/nylon things. just bought them and put them in and works like new. lol 04Aviator, you will drop at least 1 bolt, except i didnt use a magnet, i stuck my hand throught the speaker opening (Ouch).
