Long story short. First Ford. Converted from Chevy. Well Bought a 84 Bronco, previous buyer says original engine blew but was replace from another 84 bronco and its the 351w. Flywhell had flat spot so I go to replace it. None of the flywheels bolt patern will align. I have six bolts on the valve cover but its not perfect square. top part kind of looks like it could be trapozodial. the casting number on the block is E3AE-6015-BA17. I have been told it could be a 351m since the 351w flywheel don't match but I thinK I am missing something. I woul like to know what engine it is or what excatly I have. Would appreciate any help. So far my first ford is not a happy one. Moma would also appreciate since it her baby that she always wanted. Thank you again Chow.
It may be a 302 that someone thought was a 351w. They stopped putting 351m in trucks in 83 (82 was the last year). I would take the old flywheel and match it up.
An easy way of telling the 351C/M from the 351W is look for a timing case cover. The 351W has one the others do not. Between a 302 and a 351W, from the bottom of the oil pan to the top of the valve cover is 20 3/4" vs 23 3/4 ". These are Ford specs.

Another quick way to tell, 351w has large aluminum timing cover like 302- 351c/351m/400m all have thin steel cover. 302 and 351w flywheels will interchange but.....balance is completely different.
302/351W also have the thermostat in the front of the intake manifold, the t-stat housing/water outlet stick straight out the front of the manifold. The 351C has the water outlet/t-stat housing comming up from the top front of block in front of the manifold. No water goes through the 351C intake manifold. Not sure on 351M/400. I'm thinking they would be the same as 351C?
Yes, SoCal your right on all cleveland and modified blocks the thermostat bolts directly to the block although there is a coolant crossover passage that goes through the intake on the heads. Also, the easiest way to tell between 351 and 302 on the windsor blocks is also the thermostat housing the bottom bolt is clears the water pump on the 351 where the 302 is behind the water pump and harder to get at. As far as the casting numbers I believe they are on the flat on the top of the back of the block but, I'm not positive.
Well, maybe thick isn't the right word but it is wide, where the c and m engines the block goes around the timinchain where the w engines the aluminum cover goes around it.
With 6 bolts on valve covers it can't be 351 C or 351 M. They have 8. Must be either 302 or 351 Windsor block. Where did you get the flywheel? Parts stores make mistakes all the time.
