Hey all, yet another question about my explorer...when i have my ac on and i first step on the gas there is a loud whistle i hear from inside the car...i can't really pinpoint where its coming from but it goes away after a couple of seconds on the gas...the higher the setting of the fan the louder....I had it on 1 and it was light i then put it on 2 and it was louder...anybody know what this could be?
I am sorry that I don't have any specific advice. I only asked when your whistle sound occurs because I think that my '04 just started doing the same thing with the A/C on a few days ago. The only difference is that I only notice it when I step on the gas within the first few minutes of the car being on. In addition, it doesn't always occur so I will never get the dealer to figure it out. It is very annoying though if I was in your position with it happening all the time, I think I would be even more annoyed. Please let me know if you get any more info.
Given that it occurs only with the AC on and at higher engine RPM's I'd suspect a vacuum leak in the control circuits for the AC system. Probably somewhere under the dash. Could be anything from a hose off or broken to a cracked control component. Good luck in the search.
Does the whistle really vary with the different fan settings? Is this repeatable everytime you take off?
Do you notice the air coming from the vents changing? I ask this because if the whistle is a vacuum leak, then your vents might being adjusting with the change in vacuum when you accelerate and therefore changing the amount of sound. But that doesn't really explain why the fan setting changes the loudness since the fan is all electrical.
It doesn't seem as if air is changing while the whistle is occurring...the whistle comes often, it might not be every time i reach 2500-3000 rpm's but it usually comes the more i drive....i do notice when the hood is open its coming from the front passenger side of the car and when i shut the car off i hear air being released from that area, it sounds like air flowing out of a tire when you pull a nail out...
The sound you're describing may well be the residual pressure in the AC refrigerant system bleeding off through the orafice into the evaporator. This is normal if you shut down the engine while the AC is running. I can usually hear in in my vehicles when I get out even if the hood is closed. However, if it has a very high pitch, like your whistle, that would be unusual. It could indicate something strange with the expansion orifice in the AC system.
