Just a quick question on whether or not this may sound like the right thing to do or not?? I have a 02 sd250 w/58k miles, I had a #35 fuse blow, which caused my guages, power windows, dome lights, radio, and alarm to stop working. I tried to replace the 10 amp fuse, but it would blow the minute I turned the key in the ignition. Anyway, took it to ford today and they say it needs a whole new fuse box in the passanger compartment ($ 600.00) but they still cant find a short of any kind, they need the new box to find the short, if there is one, and of course i would pay for there time to find it. Should I just go get my truck and get a second opionion or does this sound like a resonable response.
Ive seen a few fuse boxes that were smoked from a short on these trucks but other techs were working those jobs so I dont know what was the cause. I have also seen bad central security modules cause similar problems. Since I cant see what the shop is seeing and they cant explain it here, I would have to reserve judgement whether it is reasonable or not.
Thats the whole issue, they dont know what the problem is either. The tech told me that the only way they can find a short is to first replace the whole fuse box, see if still blows the fuse, then search the wiring or components for a short from there.
If there is a short, isn't there a way to test the wiring or component first before replacing the fuse box, and if there is a short, fix it first and see if still needs the fuse box?
I would just hate to drop $ 600 for a new fuse box, then have them call back and say that there is still a short in something else and be charge $ 75hr for them to search for it, and having no idea on how long or what other expenses would be involved. Im no mechanic, but I would think there has to be a different way for them to approach the problem.
Just thinking out loud here.
How difficult is it to unplug the central security module? Is it just burried in the dash, or can it be accessed easily?
#35 fuse is only 10 amp. Is that a circuit that triggers a relay to provide power to all those items?
Just curious.
AL.
Sounds like they're getting ready to charge you upwards of a grand for a blown fuse. Try for a second opinion somewhere, even if it's a different Ford dealership. (Don't tell them you went to the first and see what they say). What k does your warranty cover up to?
Anyway finally got it back today, I went ahead and let them do it, but was kinda hesitant. So apparently the wires that go to the rear dome light in the cab were both shorting together and burnt up and trashed my entire fuse box? I still cant really buy that whole idea, but its working for now. Im now the proud owner of a $ 700.00 fuse box they let me keep If anyone wants it I could let go for 1/2 price
