I have a 1999 4cyl 5spd man 4x2 Ranger XL. I bought it brand new of the lot and have just under 70,000 mi.
My problem is that since day one I have had stalling problems. Sometimes when you slow to turn a corner and down shift, it acts like it is going to stall out on u and has a few times. Also, sometimes it wont go into 2nd gear. It gets hung up halfway in gear and wont go any further until you take it back to neutral and then try again. Its also never shifted smoothly from 1st to 2nd.
The first few times I took it in they replaced the "mas airflow sensor" and the "air bypass valve" (a total of 3 times) Then 2 years later the guy who does my oil changes told me that it shouldnt be shifting that rough and that I should have the bearings checked so I took it in again and they told me I was crazy (yes, they actually told me that). Finally, I recently took it in again when the clutch started squeeling when letting it out and was told that there was a pad that needed replacing, which they did.
Now, I am still having problems with shifting between 1st and 2nd and most recently it actually decelerated after turning a corner. I never had these kinds of problems with my last clutch and am at my whits end with this truck and my waranty has expired. Can anyone tell me what may be wrong with the thing???? PLEASE HELP !!!!!!
If you are stopped and the engine is running, does the engine tend to "bog down" if you turn the steering wheel? There is a pressure switch on the power steering pump that should keep this from happening. If your switch is bad, the engine can lug or stall when you turn the wheel. The tranny shifting problem possibly (but probably not) could be caused by this. More than likely, it is a clutch release problem.
For the shifting problem I would think it could be the syncro's between 1st and 2nd. Hopefully that's not it because that's not cheap. About the stalling and decellerating problem...possibly the TPS (throttle position sensor)? Sometimes when going around a corner in my 98 2.5L 5 spd in second gear it will try and bog down. I just press the clutch pedal, rev it, and put it back in gear. I was having a TPS problem at one point and I think the two may have been related.
