I have aquired 2 trucks a 59 and a 60 short box. the 59 has less rust. It has a slight roll over. I need to to replace the cab top and the top part of passenger door. Has anyone fabricated a removable hardtop? I might have a curved back window cab availible, are they hard to find? Does anyone have one made into a convertable? This will be a hot rod with a 302-c-4 drivetrain. What are the best motor mounts? thanks for the help.
I personally don't know of anyone who has ever fabricated a removable hard top for one of these trucks. Sounds like a pretty interesting idea though!
These trucks actually did come from the factory as convertables though. They were called "cab & windshield" models, and were used as Ice cream trucks, and fire trucks. I've also seen convertable F-series fire trucks that have a removable soft top, though I don't know if the top was made by Ford.
The "big back window" cabs are out there (you can still find them), but I don't believe were nearly as many made as the standard back window cabs. If you wan't it and the price is right, I would grab it.
As far as replacing the top portion of the door, without knowing the extent of the damage, it sounds like it might be a lot easier to just replace the entire door.
Sorry I can't help you with the motor mount part of your question. I'm sure someone who can will be by shortly.
There is a local guy to me that has done a 56 big window removable hard top, it is painted the cameleon color changing paint with a matching trailer. he worked on it for several years and is a beautiful truck. has alot of time and money into it. I coulnd find any pics but still looking
Glac, I remember the truck you're talking about. I think both Classic Trucks and Custom Classic featured it. Doesn't the roof have a custom rack on the front of the trailer to hold it? That truck is one hell of a fabrication job! I looked those features over a lot when the magazines came out. A beautiful truck.
I think thats the one, and the trailer had a cooler built in it as well. it was a local truck to southern oregon as the place I used to work did the stereo in it about halfway through the build..no paint, no interior, most fab was done. it had 19" on the front and 20" on the rear.
I dont know of any companies that make a repro roof panel, I would think a Cab with a rusted floor or somthing like that with a nice roof area would make a great donor cab, then swap them out
I ssaw one 58 on ebay, it looks terible and has no lines at all. IMO, any convertible truck sounds kind of "cootie bob"(tm) like. Used cabs aren't hard to come by and if you can find a big window than go that route. -4speed
I agree look at the graphics by the doors and front fenders they do not line up. For that kind of money there appears to be a lack of attention to detail. I bet all the work was hired out and 50% was labor.
