I have not done it, but when I was having the tranny out the mechanic called me (knowing the pan was rusty) and said it would be a good time to change the oil pan since the tranny is out it would be easy. Not sure that helps you and certainly should be able to do it without removing the tranny, but figured any idea might be worth 2 cents at least.
BTW, be sure to check the oil pickup screen. Mine was found half sludged at 65000 miles.

I would say just unbolt the trans at the cross member and lightly jack the back end of the trans up to gain some clearence. This should pitch the motor up in the rear and give you a little clearnce. I would use an old shirt and a 2x4 on the jack to keep from crushing the pan. You could also unbolt one motor mount and **** it to one side to gain clearnce. Anyway you do it just use as little force as practicable.
i just did a pan gasket on my 95 4x4, im not 100% sure if a 2wd is easier mut mine was a pain, what i did was unbolt both motormounts and jack the front of the motor up as much as possible then supported it again with 2x4 between where the motor mounts bolt up. i didnt have enough room to get the pan outbut there was enough room to get the old gasket out (its the new style 1piece rubber gask) and clean the block and pan, and put the new one in, it was a bit of a hassle but better than droppin tranny or pullin motor. i also did a pan gasket on my bronco with a 300 when i still had it, the trany was out so that made it a lot easier, but to still get enough clearance i had to take toe oilpump pickup off to get pan out, hope this helps you
I have a '93 2wd.
I unbolted the motor mounts, took the hood off, blocked my metal carport and wenched the engine up 2-3 inches.
*** Clean the area where the old gasket is before you unbolt the pan, as you will get trash falling into the pan when you pull the gasket off.*** (I didn't and had to get my hand in the pan. Removed as much as I could and changed the oil and filter right after.)
Get the pan bolts off, removed the old gasket, cleaned the block and pan surfaces.
I got the one piece rubber gasket (blue in color) and went from the underside of the pan and gently streched it around the edge of the pan.
The gasket kit came with 4 plastic bolts to hold the pan and gasket up in the corners so you can start the bolts.
It's been 6+ months and no leaks.

If you are just putting on a new gasket, there is no need to totaly remove the pan. I did my 95 by unbolting both motor mounts and oil pan, jack up motor, remove whats left of old gasket, put in new gasket, and bolt everything back up. Not a lot of clearance, but enough to get the job done. A lot easier than dropping the tranny too. Took me 2-3 hours. That was about 30,000 miles ago, and no problems with it since. Good luck!

I unbolted my mounts and jacked the front of the engine up. Ended up pulling off the hood and even unbolted the wiper motor as the back of the EFI hit it. It's a tight fit but can be done. If you've got alot of mileage, I would suggest replacing the oil pump while you have the pan off. It's not that expensive. I agree that you can replace the gasket without removing the pan but it's hard to make sure both surfaces are clean.
