Expedition tires

I have a 2002 Expedition Sport 4x4. What is the largest tire I can safely go to without a lift or new wheels? It currently has the stock P265/70R17's. I have seen a 285, 305 & 315 listed by BFG for the AT KO. Any ideas? Thanks!

you can fit a 285/70/17 without a problem, any larger will rub. Search this topic and you'll find all kinds of ideas.

I tend to disagree with mook...I test fitted some 285's on my 2001 expy with some rubbing....you can fit the 285's with some trimming under the bumper and may still have some rubbing under hard situations...just my 2 cents

I've got LT285/75/16's which are taller and as wide as the tire you mention. I've never had any rub issues.

Buzzard, Are your tires 16" or 17"? If they are 16 then your tires are the same size as the 17" that he has now. The 285/ 17 is too tall for the truck the way it sits. I am currently in the process of switching from 17" down to 16" because I can't get a load range tire for the 17" wheels for under $1000 for the set. To top it all off it's not even a tire that I want! I can get a complete set of wheels (16" welds) and a set of 285/75/16 in a load range D for $850! That includes mounting, balancing, and installation on the truck. This size will put me in the exact same size diameter that I have now which is 31.7 inches.

285/75/16 and 285/70/17 are the same exact size tire(diameter and width, not rim obviously).... If buzzard is fitting it, then anyone else should be able to. Lots of people on the forum are running 285/70/17 and fitting it fine... Im sure it could have probs with serious off roading, but everyday drivers seem to be fine.

265/70/17 and 285/ 70/16 are the same size tire. The 265/70/17 is the stock tire size that the Ex comes with from the factory with 17" wheels. If you go to a 285/70/17 they are 2+ in taller. Just went through all this this weekend.

Just to muddy the waters...

If you're thinking of buying 285/70R17 BFG ATKOs from Sam's Club, they're backorderd 6-8 weeks right now!

Just venting...

4by4, you are mentioning a diff size tire now...above buzzard and myself are mentioning 285/75/16 and 285/70/17 which are the same size tire....put them into a tire calculator... maybe a tenth of an inch diff in diameter, but pretty much same exact thing. Either one fits.

All I stated is that the stock tire size for the truck is 31.7 inches. The 285 sits at 32.8". Depending on wether or not the suspension has sagged or if they have a push bar installed will depend on wether or not it fits. If it's a 2WD then forget it... it will never clear. You can fit 32" tires on these trucks provided you have the correct back spacing on your wheels. Any aftermarket wheels with a different backspacing that push the wheel out from the truck will result in a rub issue. The extra weight of a push bar or any spring sag will also affect fit. If it does rub anywhere it will only be minimal. Expy sport is going from a stock size tire to a 285.... this will be approximately 2" taller, it will also affect performance on the road, towing capacity, fuel mileage, not to mention speedometer and odometer readings will be off by about 10 MPH. I have done this time and time again on Jeeps, Toyotas, Nissans, Chevys, And Fords that I have owned. I got tickets for speeding because of this and I almost always did a gear swap to make up for the overage. The one time I didn't swap gears I got a $200 Speeding ticket for not paying attention to the difference in my speedometer.

Yeah, the 285/75/16 is about a tenth or two taller than the 285/70/17. Remember that these sizes are not absolute either. I was browsing one of the manufacturer's website and they had the 285/75/16 listed 1/10 inch taller than if one were to calculate height based on the stated size.

As noted in my sig, mine is a 4x4 and I cranked my torsion bars a bit to virtually level the truck.

Regardless of the size you buy, get the Bridgestone Dueler Revo's A/T. If you research the forum you'll find out these are the "best" tires for your vehicle.

I bought mine last fall and I love them!!!

Go Yankees!
