new offroader needs advice

I bought my buddys truck it has 39" tsls on 16" 9.75 rims on it but he never regeared it or put lockers in it.Its a 96 250 with lock out hubs.i want to go off roading with some of my friends but i only have about a grand to do whatever to the truck.should i regear it first or put a rear locker in it first? what would be better?it does go kinda slow with the stock gears im told they are 4:10s.But wont a rear locker make my tires ware out faster?.i was thinking of a rear air locker but some guy told me that a air locker doesnt dig in as good as a regular locker whats up with that?so you see i need some help here..what would you do if you were me?.

A rear locker would be the way I'd go. And to prevent tire wear a selectable one would be better (Air or other mechanism). As for not pulling as good, all lockers are the same unless they are limited slip (not really a locker). But unless you are doing some serious off road, your truck will do fine already. I mean i have 31's on my ranger and no lockers, and i hit some pretty hard stuff. If you find you need more torque, you can always put it in low range. good luck.

HELL YEAH MAN! welcome to the dark side! get to breaking stuff, hehehe

well i would prolly do the gears first then the lockers cause if the truck has a hard time pullin now then when you add a second tire to the mix it will surely bog down!

a spool will wear your tire a lot faster but a locker shouldn't maked a difference. however if you have a detroit (auto locker) when you go around turns if you lay into the gas the rear axle will lock up and it will start to wear them down. an air locker is JUST AS STRONG and they are nice! but expensive....but they 'dig' jsut a good as a 'regualr' locker!

hope this helps a lil bit and lurk around here for a while and go to www.pirate4x4.com and pokje around over there, word to the wise though...i wouldn't post; just read, lol

so the only reason a rear locker will ware your tires down is around corners if you dont let off the gas?

about $190 per axle. yes shop charges will kill ya that's why i would suggest learning how to setup gears....it isn't all that hard, just takes a lot of patience.

lurk around on completeoffroad.com they have the stuff you need except gears for your D50 which randy's ring and pinion will have

-cutts-

an AUTO locker will wear on tires just a lil bit.....not much IF you hit the gas while turning. a selectable locker will have no effect on your tires whatsoever until you lock'em in!

I can't believe no one has suggested a SAS on his truck. SO here it goes. I would suggest you put a solid axle (dana 60) up front, I'd be leary about spending money on a Dana 50 TTB (Re-gear/lockers, etc). I don't know much about the F250 TTBs but can they handle much abuse from 39" tires?

if i was him i would wear out that ttb since it is fairly new. a ttb 50 can withstand some abuse from 39's but it won't last long. and it won't last a week with a locker! you are right i would go with a solid Dana 60

Yup i know that TTB dana 50 sucks i would love a dana 60 but guess what i only have a grand.I sure wish i had more if i did i would have air lockers front and rear and a dana 60 and MAYBE 4:88 or 5:13 gears?Im no mechanic but i can turn a wrench.A junk yard here has a dana 60 they want 900 bucks for it and its from a 97 350 and the brakes are no good on it.The guy i bought the truck from just drove the truck on the street he told me so i guess all show and no go.lol..you really need alot of money for this hobby well to me anyway.i dont want a regular locker i know it will ware my tires down to the bone and i dont have much money so i want an air locker?i guess but i was looking at them and man oh man alot of money.maybe i can get fishman to come to my house and bring me a dana 60 and we can drink some beer and do my truck up right.LOL.I guess i have some things to think about this truck.

As someone else said a locker be auto or selectable will NOT wear your tires unless you think you have to power it around corners all the time, and an open diff will wear one tire when you do that. yes air lockers are nice, but for the difference in price you could buy a complete set of tires, or wear out 2 sets of rear tires, and still be money ahead, so if on a budget I would go with the detroit locker in the rear, and leave ther ttb in the front open (don't waste the money putting a locker in a diff that won't last save it for a SAS), and if you only have a grand you won't be able to put an air locker in, and still be able to by gas. BTW I ran a detroit locker in a dually I used for towing a 28ft goose neck stock trailer, and didn't see any difference in the wear on my tires from when it had the open rear in it.
As far as regearing it for now I would save that money also for the D60 front, and use low range when you are out mudding this will give you plenty of power.

with an auto locker you will notice a lil bit of chirping around corners and if it icy stay home! with a selectable....you won't know it is there except for the switch in the cab!

If you're commuting 60-75 miles a day, then you DEFINITELY don't wanna regear to a 4.88 or 5.13. Then again, you ARE running 39" tires...I'd save that regearing money and get a locker.
Yes, it's quite alright and sometimes a lot more fun to use lowlock with your automatic. The trick to having a locker on the street is learning how to use it. You coast into a turn, ease theu it, and once done turning, get back on the gas. Just takes some technique to keep from fishtailing.
