I was talking to a ford salesman and he said that alot of v10's are getting 14 mpg. I have a 99 f250 v10 crew cab 4x4 with 373 gears. I can only get 10 mpg at 75 mph. He told me that I need to go in and get it reprogramed that something must be wrong. He said it should get at least 14. Have you guys ever heard of this.
And if so, what does it cost to get it reprogramed.
Don't know if the 99 will benifit from a reprogram or not.
Some info: There are more than 20 different Ford "codes" for the SuperDuty PCM over the last 5 years. For a while FORD would "fix" flutter with a reflash to a new code. Almost every owner here, and on the diesel site, said that the flutter fixing code reduced the power and made the truck almost undriveable.
From 01 through mid 02 many of us forum guys posted different details on our trucks and we compared notes on different codes. I don't ever think we got enough intrest, or different codes, to determine the ones that were "better" but we gave it a shot.
None of the chip programers ever let loose the info they know. I assume if anybody knows ALL about Ford codes, it would be the chip sellers.
I too am only getting about 10-11 MPG loaded or unloaded it just don't matter, 04, V-10, A/T, FX4, extended cab with 3.73 gears at 70-75 MPH. (9000 miles). I would like to enjoy that 14-15 MPG some of you guys are talking about too, so please post any info regarding this so called "reprograming" procedure if you find it.
If I pull my 17 foot boat and haul my over head camper it takes me down to 7.56 mpg. and thats using a calculator. My camper weighs 2100 pounds with water and gear and my boat weighs 1500 pounds loaded. I dont know if I can afford this pickup anymore.
Redbull: Something is definetely wrong if you only get 7.5mpg. The worst I've done is 9.5 and that was with a ton of wood in the bed and a 5000lb trailer at 75-80 mph with the majority of the trip uphill. I have 4.30's with 35" tires, 4x4. Empty at 65 on flat ground I get almost 16, at 80 I'm back down around 11-12.
Are your brake calipers sticking? Any abnormal exhaust restriction? Air filter dirty? Tires inflated properly?
Just throwing out a few things, a reprogram might help.
I picked up 15-25 miles per tank switching to mobil 1 0w20.
These trucks are great, but all over the board when it comes to mpg's.

Regardless of what everyone says about better mileage at faster speeds on the highway, I have gotten my best freeway mileage of over 14 at 60, at 65 it drops to 13, and at 70-75 I get 12-ish. My normal combined city/hwy mileage is 11.5 or so. I have 2wd and 3.73 gears, I know the 4WD has to cost a mile or two a gallon but you should get better than 10. Try a tankful at lower speeds, if you're still getting 10 you need to look into why I think, Ken
Ken04 is right in the ball park for typical V10 mpg averages. I did manage to get some occasional 14.7mpg days, but most of the time she averaged 12.7-13.2 per tankfull. Every single time I towed my trailer and load into the mountains I got as low as 5, high of 9, and average over a 1500mile trip of 8.3 MPG! Only way I got that much was heavy traffic and low speeds. One or two trips out west with a long pull accross Texas I got less than 7 average. I will attest that speeds over 70-75 eat Gasoline like it is cheap.
Ed 77460f150, your new 4x4 rig will take longer than a typical 4x2 to "break in". There is no majic program to get much better fuel milage except full tire inflation and slow down. I did not start getting better mpg on my daily commute until she had over 20K on the clock. Mixed driving unloaded she was fairly consistant at 11.7-12.3mpg and ended up setteling in at 13.7mpg during my long month to month daily commutes.
Redbull your 99 is getting as good as it gets with a tall air dam on an already poor aerodynamic truck. I doubt there is any majic program for you either.
None of the power boosting methods really yield any mpg gains and several loose ground. So unless you NEED more POWER don't waste the money.
I got a slight gain from intake and exhaust mods and lost ground with bigger tires. I hated the noise of the exhaust so sold it to one of my sons go fast friends and put factory system back and saw absolutly no difference.
I don't know if it was a placebo effect but I swear the tonneau cover made a difference but the fuel gage never proved my gut feeling true as I have had several runs with and without at same avg mpg figures +/- .2mpg.
A little clarification. Almost all of my tanks are on the streets 10 miles each way back and forth to work. I get about 10.5 pretty much no matter what on those tanks.
I still think something's wrong at 7.5mpg with a relatively light load.
Thanks guys I have talked to a couple of ford dealers and they said that if it aint flashing a check engine light or any codes then there is nothing they can do to it. So I have decided to sell it and get a powerstroke, I do alot of towing and traveling. thanks for the replys, cory
How much are you gonna lose on the trade? How much more is the PSD gonna cost (up front cost, oil changes, maintenance). The difference will buy you a lot of gas.
I know about the up front costs, I do all of my own mechanic work and I am going to sell my pickup out rite, I never do a trade in because of the money that you lose. A buddy of mine owns a car dealership here in town, he said he could take me up to the auto auction and I could find a psd there. I will get it at whole sale cost and then pay him an extra $200 for the good buy. I use to drive psd's all the time I thought I would try a v10 because it would start better when I go snowmobiling. Guess I should have kept my psd. thanks

Remember that every car/truck that goes through the auction does so for a reason. Dealers don't take 'diamonds' with 'lot's of eyeball' from their lots. I know from being in that business a long time that sometimes even a great vehicle can sit and sit and not sell. But usually only because of something. High mileage, bad exterior/interior, current disfavor with the marketplace, any number of reasons. But there is always a reason a used car manager will sell off a unit from the lot to a wholesaler who will then take it to auction. Or send the rig to auction himself. So make sure you go early and inspect the rigs you may be bidding on. Once you buy it, no matter what, it's yours. Be careful, and good luck with your PSD, Ken

rb,
Doesn't sound like much of a buddy if he's charging you $200 to get a truck. As usual, it only proves my extremely LOW opinion of most car salesmen -- they'd sell their own mother for a buck!!
BTW, get the 6.0 PSD. Big difference between the new and the old!!!
