A friend of mine is looking for a used f250 4x4 for $10,000-$15,000. Ive done a lot of looking for him (online and dealers) and found a lot of good trucks that he liked but neither of us were sure about the motor. Now he is a farmer, and will use it for work almost everyday (fifth wheels mostly). Ive found nice ones with the gassers: 5.4 v8, 6.8 v10 and some with the deisels: 6.0 v8, 7.3 v8. Now of course in good condition the deisels will be alright... they own trucks with both those motors, but my real question is will the 5.4 and 6.8 be tough enough under a heavy load, because the nice newer used deisels will run a nice high price and are hard to find... (average day use.... delivor hay, 30ft steel fifth wheel, my best guess is what, 9-10 tons?) To be honest they beat the livin crap out of their vehicles so i doubt the 5.4 will work... I would appreciate any help since he really needs it before school.
If he's towing that much, the diesel will pay for itself rather quickly. I wouldn't even consider the 5.4 for that kind of daily use, the the V10 will guzzle gas. I'm assuming since he's a farmer that he will register it for a higher weight rating. Get the 7.3 PSD with a 4.10 gear ratio. It's dependable and will hold up much longer to that kind of daily use.
