Duraspark II resistor

I'm wiring my Duraspark II in an older vehicle and I want to know if you need to have the coil resister?

Maybe this is a good place for my question.My 79 f-150 is melting the heat sink material out of the back of the module.I replaced the module a couple of years ago because of this and noticed the rubbery,melted goo running from behind the module again just the other day.What would cause this?
