I'm looking at getting a 1997 - 2000 extended cab 4x4 Ranger. It will be used to pull around a 17 foot boat. First off, would a Ranger be able to handle a boat of this size, specifically the 3.0? I looked through the AutoTrader online ads and didnt find any 4x4 4.0s in my area. The only V6s I found were 3.0s. Would it be worth it to wait another couple of months to find a 4.0 or would the 3.0 be adequate? I know a fullsize would be the best route for towing anything, but trying to commute to college in something that gets that bad of mileage isn't affordable.
a 4.0 is well worth the wait, its almost as good as having a 302 under the hood. mine gets a consistant 17mpg back and foth to work and 20 highway. (with 3.73 gearing and the 5-spd stick.) the 3.0 aint bad in a taurus chassis, but has to be wound out pretty good to reach it's max hp/tourque. go 4.0! Dave
Agreed, the 3.0 just barely has enough power unloaded. The 4.0 will make pulling so much easier. The mileage difference is minimal. You should be able to get over 20 with a 4.0. I had gotten as much as 22 before I started to mod mine, now it's even better.
Not one single vote for the 3.0 I mean, i have the 4.0 and love it, but i thought some of you 3.0er's would at least try to convince him to get it. The old "There's no replacement for displacement" saying fits in here.
