There is about a 1" gap between my steering wheel and the steering column. Looks unsitely + my horn/blinker return doesn't work. Puller the wheel and reseated. Still the same. There's gotta be a piece missing. Manual doesn't help nor does catalogs. Hope somebody out there can. Thanks for any info.
I think this gap gets bigger as the epoxy on the wheel shrinks. Almost every truck I've seen in the yards have been the same. I thought there should have been a shroud or something in there as well.
Just remember, these trucks weren't built to tight tolerances.
I thought about taking the wheel off and adding some extension to it with epoxy and then having the wheel repainted. But I have since replaced the column and wheel with aftermarket.
Have you checked your cab mounts ( the round hockey pucks) and the steel mounts themselves for rost out and the pucks getting soft or missing? Sounds like the cab is setling on you. Also pull the steering wheel and look at the signal switch for damage. With a gap like that, the cancel mech. won't cancel properly. There's a tapered shift collar, then a collar with the signal switch in it, then the steering wheel. if you have these pieces in the proper order and still a gap, I'd say there's settling and some problems with the cab mounts.I have the parts books with the correct illustrations of the columns and can e-mail you this if you list your e-mail address with a space between each letter of it to get by the censors.
I had the same problem on my 64 but,not an inch. It's an easy fix thou.Just loosen up the steering colum support on the lower part of the dash and slide the colum up until you have about a 1/8th inch gap or so.It should fix your turn signal problem too.
Suggest going with minishtr's recommendation first. May be able to get some minor adjustment as explained. There is also a retainer just forward of the rag joint. Suggest loosening nut, usually has a cage bolt, then secure after adjustment.
