I have a 98 F150 and the guy I bought it from had to repo it so they changed the ignition now the dinger goes off when the door is open key is out of the ignition... I thought it was suppose to ding only when it was still in but the engine was off or if you left your lights on. How do you disable that?? I've tried to find it but no luck.
No really guys there is a small chime under there and if you find it just unplug it. Then there will be no dinging at all. If you take apart your column around the key you can trace the wire that lets the chime have power when the key is present and clip it there so that the chime will still work for other features that require a chime. Hope that helps.
I've searched for it... and I know the area its in but when feeling around its hard to find that plug... unless there is an easier way... I know its a pain on my truck
If you really hate it get out the tools and take the time to do it. When you find it it feels great to smash it if it doesn't matter if you have it anymore. The results are worth the task. Darn dinger.
On these newer trucks the dinger is built into the GEM module and cant be removed.
Usually if it's a problem that it thinks the key is in the ignition you need to check the contacts in the ignition lock cylinder like Jeff In ND said.
If the dingdong goes off and the door ajar light is on usually you can cure that by spraying tons of WD40 (only) into the door latches and opening and closing the doors a bunch of times. The switches inside the latches gum up. WD40 cleans and lubes them.
I just had mine apart recently to work on the multifunction switch. Once you disconnect the battery for 2 minutes (so the airbag doesn't kill you accidentally while working on the column), you turn the key to the 'on' position. Then use a paperclip to push up into the small hole directly under the cylinder and it will release it so you can pull it out. Then take the 3 screws that hold the top and bottom halves of the cover together out and remove both pieces. If you look at the boss where the cylinder was, you'll see 1 or 2 small plastic pieces that hold the contacts to the inside of the hole. One toward the wheel and one toward the dash. You can either clip the wire (I think it's on the one closest to the wheel that senses whether the key is in the cylinder or not. I think the tiny little connector is black), or tape over it. I prefer a clean break, as tape can lose it's grip. Be sure to seal the end of the wire so it can't accidentally make contact and drive you nuts later. Then put the cover back together, insert the 3 screws and then the lock cylinder. Reconnect the battery and test it out. This way the other functions work and it kills that stupid chime that comes on with the key in.
I may have pics of this procedure coming, as I have to take mine apart again for more TS switch fun... (See my other post on that fiasco)
My 01 Ranger would ding with the door open, no key in the ignition. There is a wire from the door going to ground. I put a toggle switch in series with it so I can switch it off. I like the stealth mode at night. You can open the door without the dome light coming on.
Kind of like the post before mentioned. The door switches work off of creating a ground to complete the circuit. When the door open, the switch moves and completes the circuit to ground, turning on the dome lights...etc.
Now I haven't bothered with mine so I am not sure if the switch is located at the front of the door frame or the rear, but where ever it is, you will need to remove the inside panel and locate the POWER wire that leads to it. The switch gets it ground from where the switch contacts the body itself, thats why only 1 wire to the switch. Now like I said, I haven't dug into the switch on my 02 F150 so unless they have redesigned something that has worked since they started putting dome lights in cars, it should still be the same setup.
When you cut the power wire, make sure you tape off the end of it to keep it from coming in to any contact with the body or anything else meal. You dont want it to start blowing fuses.
Post back and let me know where you find yours. I'm starting to think about killing that dinging myself.
Thanks billy, mines all ready been killed. The previous owner must have done something to it.I'm just trying to figure out how they did it.I'm glad the ding is gone but I would like the dome light back.
