I hate to say it, but I've never done it. They did it for me once in the shop though, about 35K ago. It idles fine but I figured that I would do it as part of the next tune up.
I know that you are only supposed to use throttle body cleaner. Given that my truck idles well, I just want to do an easy cleaning. Do I just remove the two intake hoses and spray the stuff into the throttle body?
The last time it was done, the guy said that he was amazed at how clean it was. So I don't think that there is going to be a bunch of crud in there.
i would like to know this too
i was going to run some sea foam thru but if removing the throttle body would be alot better i will remove it when i have time
what do yall think
i already need to remove iac to clean it
Actually, the best way would be to remove it and then clean it. You can get it so much better. You can either buy a new gasket from an auto parts store or make one with the right material. I usually clean the throttle body with a soft bristle toothbrush and yes, throttle body cleaner and NOT carb cleaner like you said JBronco. Once you have it off, you can then take the IAC off and then take the IAC apart also and clean the inside of it. Replace gasket as well on this one. I know this isn't the best, but you will get the picture once you take it apart. You can probably do it in less than an hour it timed. This is also a good time to replace your TPS if it is old. On my 89, it was original and I replaced it last year. Less then $20. and it's a part that you almost have to take the Throttle Body off to get to. It's on the underneath side of the TB.
Thanks - now suppose that I just want to do a quickie cleaning when I change out the plugs. Do I just remove the two intake hoses and spray the throttle body cleaner in there?
i just did this today (while i was waiting to get a new ignition switch) it didnt take long to remove the throttle body maybe 10 minutes if your really being careful not to spill antifreeze and such but the iac is on the side of the throttle body it has two parts the motor and the valve they are held together with screws on mine and bolted to the side of the throttle body. it has a plug directly on the end of the iac
on mine the only wires going to the throttle body were to the iac and to the tps the tps is very small and on the bottom of the throttle body with 3? wires coming out going to a plug you shouldnt have a problem distinguishing them
OK I know that the TPS is the throttle position sensor. What is the IAC? Is it a sensor, or electrically controlled, or what? Should it be replaced like the TPS instead of cleaned? If so is it cheap?
And should I even worry about it - because my truck idles steady and smooth like a Cadillac even though it has 123K and all of these things are original as far as I know (and I have almost all of the service records since it was new)?
I am a believer in preventive maintenance, but not in wasting time and money.
