Can anyone explain what could cause my driver's side blinker, brakeliht and tailight to malfunction? If I try to use the blinker and the brake at the saem time I loose all three of the lights. Sometimes I have a tailight and sometimes I have a brake light, but once I use the blinker I usually loose all of them. Any ideas.
Also my blinkers do not work,I have to operate the blinker manually on the stearing column.
Is this a problem in the steering column? Or the brake light sending unit?
make sure you have the correct bulbs. Installing single pole bulbs in a double pole socket will cause short circuits between the brakes and turn signal/running lights and create some very wierd symptoms
All,
This subject is one that I am surprised is not mentioned more often.
The intermittent failure makes it possible that there is more than one problem present. Let's start from the beginning.
Do the front blinkers work? When? If your blinkers work, at all, then the flasher is fine. Do the dash lights work? If so, that eliminates some problems.
A solid blinker light usually points to ground problem but, you could have a bad socket. Bad sockets are impossible to fix and easily replaced. Guess what,....replace them. Clean your grounds. next make sure the body(cab) is grounded to the motor. This ground runs from the back of the manifold to the fire wall just on the passenger side of the air filter, I think. At least that's where mine is. Start there, and get back with your findings.
Good Luck,

Thanks for all of the replies. The front blinker light works but it does not blink. I replaced the flasher several time to no avail. I wonder if it could be something with the trailer wiring. I have the correct bulbs in. Nothing blinks on either side. On the passenger side everything works fine (except it does not blink). ON the drivers side the front lights up and will blink when I manually move the blinker selector. The back tailight and/or brake light will go out when I attempt to use it. The dash lights work fine. What grounds are we talking about here?
Thanks
take all the lenses out and you will see a ground attached to the body. i had the same problem for a while, just ended up replacing all the bulbs and sockets, works fine now. Sockets can be bad and still work intermittently.
I had the exact same problem with my 77 and my brother had it with his 74. Because both of these were ground problems, I agree that yours is a ground problem too.
I couldn't find new sockets. So, I drilled a small hole through the plastic light housing and ran a wire through it to the outside of the metal bulb socket. I soldered it to the bulb socket. Then, I attached the other end of the wire to one of the bed frame members. The lights work fine now.
I've had or have a 69 F100 a 76 F100 and a 79 F150. Everyone of them has had similar symptoms at one time or another. Every time the problem was solved by replaceing a lightbulb socket. I'd test the wires right before the socket w/ a tester and they'd be proper, but the socket was just worn out. It's easy to find replacements in the auto parts store.
I had the same problem. I made sure the grounds were good, then replaced the sockets on the front & rear lights. Now they work fine. It's all in the grounds and sockets. The sockets are available at most parts houses. I cut mine off and took it in the store, as there are some different versions.
Check each socket for small cracks. I just has to replace one of mine. (same side), they were flashing very slowly with the same problem between the blinkers and brake lights. I couldn't get the stock socket here so found this one which works just fine. Pyroil # 20-5360-4
