I just recently came across this forum and have been reading in an attempt to figure out the idling issue that has been intermittently plaguing my 99 SD. It first started under warranty, but of course the dealer couldn't reproduce the problem. Now that the truck is well out of warranty and the problem has been reoccuring more frequently, the dealer wants to charge diagnostic time to fiqure it out. My mechanic feels that he has tentatively traced the problem down to a barometric sensor? The truck thinks that it's at 10000 feet! It may be tied into the MAS or the computer? No definite answer yet. I believe that he has ruled out the IAC and EGR. Sounds like this is a unusual issue? Anyone run into this before????
My mechanic admits trying to get to technical with the problem, though he has replaced many IAC motors prior. The symptoms were a little different than he had run into before. After he was at the end of the line as far as what his computer analyser was telling him, I strongly suggested that he install a IAC. He still can't fiqure out why he was getting readings showing that the truck was compansating for a 10k feet altitude? At any rate, you were right! All he charged me for was the IAC and an hour of time.
Now all I have to do is fiqure out why my dome light stays on at times and goes on/off at 15 mph. When that's fixed, my SD will be 100%. After that, it's back to work on my 66 Galaxie 7 Litre!

I'm one of those redneck Skoal dippers, and I noticed something that most people probably have not. If I was driving slow, and opened the door to do what Skoal dippers do, my dome light would come on. If I was going faster, it would not come on when I opened the door. I thought it was a nice touch for the Ford engineers to think about that when they were designing the truck.
Anyway, if the switch in the door is flaky, I would expect it to do like I think you are saying... Close the door, and it sometimes stays on, but start driving and it turns off. Is that what you are experiencing? If so, all you need to do is figure out which door, or you may get lucky by spraying some contact cleaner (or the like) into the switch on each door.
Do we have an indicator on the dash for an open door? It's been a while since I've driven mine and I can't remember.
Yes we do have a Door Ajar light. Mine and many other's have done the same thing and I just sprayed some WD-40 in there and it's been fine since. good luck
Dumb Question- where exactly did you spray the WD-40. I believe the switch is somewhere in the area of the latch itself? Did you spray all around in that area?
I just sprayed all around and in the latch mechanism and then opened and shut the door about 20 times and then sprayed in some more. After that it has never given me grief. Make sure you find which one is the culprit, you might as well lube up both anyway. good luck
