I was just starting out (5AM) on a day trip to look at colleges with my son when the Check Engine Lite came on. I see some related posts which I'll go through but I want to add some history on my vehicle.
-original owner
-78,000 miles
-3,000 mile oil changes
-all recalls taken care of
-I do all repairs/maintenance
-lately my wife(primary driver)has noticed a surging idle
-2 weeks ago I replaced the thermostat(seemed slow to warm-up)maybe this was linked to surging idle, I thought
- @ 73,000 new plugs,air & fuel filters
- @ 70,000 new serpentine belt
Is there a way to check codes without the dealer's machine?
Could the surging idle condition cause the CEL to activate?
How do you reset the CEL?
What's the most likely cause for the surging idle?
Needless to say, the trip to Univ of RI was canned, my son is back in bed and Dad is searching for answers.
Thanks.
It seems that the problem was the intake manifold O-rings. After installing dealer bought($45.00) upper+ lower O-rings the surging has stopped and the CEL is not lit. The worst part of the job were the two rearmost lower manifold bolts.
