I had a Holley Pro Jection system on for awhile. It was rated at 650 CFM and it ran too rich at idle, but was STRONG on the highway. I had all the ***** on the computer turned down, and still too much fuel, and I never tried using a fuel pressure regulator to cut the fuel down a little. I was only 18, and the thought never crossed my mind.
Im thinking of using it again when I get a hotter cam and some more headwork done. It will be able to use the extra fuel then. I definately would not reccommend it on a stock Y block, unless you want to mess with fuel pressure for awhile to get it right.
The sound it made at wide open throttle was louder than any 4 barrel I have ever heard, got a lot of looks with it. Took a weekend and a friend to get it installed and driveable. Its worthwhile if you want to have something different than most Y blocks.
A smaller CFM rating would definately be better. Gas mileage was never on my mind, but I didnt seem to be burning much more than the 2 barrel I swapped for it, even being a little overfueled. I would think mileage would go up compared to a carb if the kit is properly tuned.
I have pics fromt the f100 super nats in 2003 of a early 60's ford f100 with a 292 with a complete TBI injection unit installed. He used the throttle body, coolant sensor, o2 and TPS etc. from a 1985? grand prix. He had to modify the intake for the throttle body to fit. He drove it to PF from California with no problems.
Have any of you tried to install an aftermarket EFI system to a Y-block and is it even feasable in your opinion? Ed
Bygolly yes it's feasable!!!! Especially per cylinder fuel injection unike throttle body...Those systems provide immediate startup for one thing.
But as far as fuel mileage? I have proven over and over you do not get better fuel mileage. With EFI, your engine will last longer for one thing, it's just been proven. But with the diagnostics and the fact you do not get getter fuel mileage, as well as more expensive repair upon failure, these are the reasons i love my points /coil/ballast resisitor. On these Yblocks with those mid 70'd 302 V8 engine motorcraft 2bble fpr about 150 dollars, adjusted right, i get the same MPG and oh boy it;s cheap to fix........Janet
