I have a 94 Aerostar with a 4.0 and rear air. I lost the charge recently (the unit has never been touched since new) and was injecting a small amount of 134a to see if I could find the leak. Indeed I did. I found that the blow off valve, located at the rear top of the ac compressor next to the suction line is leaking. I have been told that this valve acts like a fuse. When blown out it does not reset but needs to be replaced. My question is can I get this valve without purchasing a replacement compressor and what steps asside from evacuating the system before recharging do I need to take? Also I understand that the charge amount is 62 oz. Is this correct? P.S. This is factory air.
Thanks Guys
It is pretty rare for the relief to open because of its own malfunction. If the relief valve is blown, it is for a reason. A problem with the system caused the pressures to reach critical levels, thus blowing the valve rather than a hose (or worse). You really should have this evaluated by a shop, as charging the system with the problem still there is dangerous.
In reference to the refrigerant charge amount, that is the max charge by weight. It won't likely take that much. The only way to get the proper charge is by checking system pressures.
Thanks, I'll have it checked by a qualified shop. Is there a chance that you can speculate on this problem so I'll kind of know what to expect from a shop such as " you need a new compressor" or you fradistat is bad and it will be six billion to fix it.
Thanks
Probably not the fradistat, but it could certainly be the caddywhompus....
Seriously, without seeing what is on the system as far as filters, mufflers and the like, I would just be taking a shot in the dark. But its definitely not the fradistat.
