The explorer I have has got a 4 liter X engine with overdrive. Sometimes when you are driving and it is in overdrive it rumbles when it downshifts. Sounds like you are running over the wakeup bumps on the side of the road. Seems like it makes a difference how much load is on the engine whereas if it is a lazy shift it seems to do it worse, when it comes down hard it does not do it. Make any since? I would appreciate any thoughts on this problem. THanks
I think what you are hearing ( or feeling ) is the torque converter locking up. This usually happens when you are at cruising speed under light loads. Mine makes a rumble, actually more like a low freq vibration, that I can feel rather than hear when it kicks it. If yours is actually making a loader noise then maybe your torque converter needs attention. Someone more knowledgable on the AL4D transmission may know better.
I had this happen on my '96 5.0 AWD. It required a transmission flush an a service bulletin says to add an anti shudder additive. Had my dealer do this (about $90) and within 10 miles of driving it went away and never returned. I previous have had me transmisson flushed yearly because I tow a horse trailer. But the additive made a noticable difference all around.
Good Luck,
Chuck
