Talking Cranks but won't start

My '99 F250/7.3 wouldn't start yesterday. Engine cranked over, but it wouldn't even try to start and my ABS light came on. I checked battery voltage-12.47 and 12.32. I put a battery charger on for a couple of minutes and it started right up. Charging voltage was 14.6. I tried chargeing the batteries, but engine would not start with out the charger on. Bought new batteries...ABS light went out and It starts just fine. FYI

Same thing happened to me last fall. I thought it was weird how the engine cranked over so quickly, yet the engine still would not start. Apparently the batteries need quite a few amps on tap so the inverter can make 120volts AC for the injectors to operate while cranking. I'm glad to see you replaced both batteries though. Some people replace one at a time, which doesn't make sense to me.

Anyway, good to hear you are back on the road. Thanks for sharing the info.

I had the same problem. It's usually only one battery that goes bad so I checked the one that was good and got a couple more years out of it in another truck. These PowerStrokes gotta have max amps.

I remember reading somewhere that one battery was just for starting and the other ran everything else. Anybody else ever see or hear of that??

The two batteries are wired in parallel, so both provide power for starting and everything else.
