ignition problems

i just replaced the starter and starter relay and seems to be havin even more troubles

randomly the starter spins with no contact to the fly wheel or sometimes the starter gets stuck on where it wont disengage

very weird it only happens once in a blue moon then i will give it a minute and maybe disconnect the battery for a minute or two and then it starts and runs fine

i think i need new a new ignition something but i have no experience with this can someone tell me what to replace first? and cost?

I don't what year but I'm pretty sure this has nothing to do with your ignition.
Starter or starter gear could be wrong or too short, flywheel could be missing teeth or bent. Maybe the starter bolts got loose?
No way is it the ignition

its an 88' i dont believe the flywheel has any missing teeth because when the starter does mess up it doesnt grind or any such thing it just spins freely also it gets good grip because it starts almost all of the time just randomly it doesnt seem to go in far enough or gets stuck in
it could be the soleniod on the starter but i figured since it was new it had to be something else

sounds like u got a bad starter. The bendex is whatmakes the starter move in and out, and it sounds like that is bad.

IS it a new starter, or a rebuilt?

If u gave autozone your phone # they will have it on their comp.

I spent $90 for my brand new one, it was smaller and spins faster, I like it. #yr warrenty from autozone.

I had a starter do that once and it was the starter that was bad. SOmething about the starter pulling the power through the solenoid and made the solenoid stick. I also for part of the problem was due to a bad ground.

If you mean it starts and the starter is still engaged(spinning) then I'd go with mastangmans answer about the bendix spring. BTW shut if off quick if that happens.
I've heard of a soleniod not engaging but I've never heard of it not disengageing, maybe somebody else knows.

well i have never been around the truck when it does this with me it has always been an angel but when someone else tries to use it she starts acting up

as the story goes the truck started and the starter would not dissengage and then even with the key off the starter kept trying to start the truck until the battery went dead

thats y i think it could be the solenoid because how else would power still be supplied to the starter with the key off?

i think i will probably replace both as a defiante fix the starter is under warrenty (though i may upgrade to a new one) and the relay is like $12

just to make sure i dont get stranded somewhere or destroy my flywheel or something

Crap I worte a nice long message, and the comp deleted it. So to make it short, make sure u replace the starter, and replace the solenoid if u want to
