Tire question

The wife (honestly) pulling into the driveway sliced the right rear tire on our brick retaining wall. Our 03 EB has 36K miles, my questions are 1) Should I buy 1 new tire, 2) buy 2 new tires to have a matched set, 3) buy 4 new tires and finally 4) any tire recommendations for street use? The stock continentals are still on.

Thanks in advance for all insight!

At a minimum, you need to buy 2 new tires... 4 would be even better.

Ask some of your local tire dealers what they would recommend. Get two or three opinions and decide which one you like the best.

If you have the means, go with 4 new tires. If you put on one or two new Conti's you're stuck with them for the next ~40K miles. However, now's the perfect opportunity to "break away" from those POS's.

If you can afford it, I agree, go with 4 new ones. Better mating, and not having a new Conti long term to contend with is a blessing.

drum role please....

After conversations with 2 local tire shops, the internet, and my Ford dealer our 03 EB will be receiving 4 Michelin 265/70/17 LTX M/S. According to my service rep Ford will match any price, local or internet. A place called the Tire Rack listed the same tire $28 cheaper than the dealer, and about $20 a tire less than local tire shop. The tire rack was also cheaper than SAMs Club, which the rep actually recommended I check their prices for a comparision. The dealer wants $52 to mount and balance, but dosen't want to lose the sell over labor cost!

The local shops and my rep highly recommended the LTX, plus Michelin has a $50 rebate when you buy 4 new tires.

Thanks for the input!

I had a set of Michelin LTX M/S on my 1999. Very good tires.

Post Tire Question

Michelin LTX is a good choice.

A couple of other very good alternatives:

Michelin Cross Terrain
Firestone Destination LE
Goodyear Fortera HL

I agree.. the LTX is a great tire... the Conti made me want to drive off into a ditch.. wait, that IS what Conti's DO in the rain..

I actually bought a new set of F150 Lariat 18" wheels and Goodrich takeoffs for my 03 Expy for $450 off Ebay, it looks better and drives better.

I am surprised that nobody recommended the Bridgestone Dueler REVO's. I have then with 22,000 miles and still love them. They still act the same as the day I bought them. Great in rain, snow, off-road and quiet on pavement. Well, let me qualify great,,,,,great for an all round tire. You would get better performance with a studded tire in winter, mudder for off road, etc...

Just my 2 cents.

I will recommend the Revos. I had them intalled on my 04 expy at 500 miles. Now have 4500 miles and the Revos make a big difference in ride and handling. I do not regret get rid of the conti crap.

Bridgestone was only mentioned once, but it was the HL not the Revo. The tire place with Bridgestone still recommended the LTX. LTX probably comes with the highest margin, so easy to recommend! Thanks for all the help from long time members, my Expy is getting her new shoes this morning!

I'll add my vote for the REVO's... I've been through a number of tires and this one never ceases to amaze me... especially considering its an AT tire. It runs and feels like an excellent all season highway tire but has the grip of an offroad tire in the winter. Quiet, comfortable, stable, and great grip in rain, shine, or snow... and they look great to boot!

I'm sure this will upset some of you but it's my opinion. That being said I am going to recommend that you ask around locally or even find a mechanic that builds or races cars, he will know. As far as the Bridgestone Revos I have doubts that they are the "best" tire. I think that people on this board tend to buy/refer products because they see them written about so much on here, kind of like a peer pressure/hive mind kind of thing. I myself made this mistake in buying Bilstein shocks. After reading so much hype (of which I bought hook line and sinker) I went out and spent way too much for something that had a negligable gain if any at all. I may be wrong about the Revo's but I won't blindly buy them without some investigating.

Basically, do your research, and take what you read here as advice not gospel.
