I am planning on stuffin a 351w in my truck I would like to keep a manual trans dose a t5 fit the 351's or is there another. I have a hyrdualic clutch and i prefer not to have to remove it. If the t-5 do not work is there another out there with hydrulic clutch or adaptible with an external slave cylinder.
We need more information about your truck. Such as, what engine is in it now? You say that you have a hydraulic clutch, is that in the truck now? What you use the truck for should also determine what kind of transmission you use in it.
Generally speaking, you're better off selling your truck and buying another truck with the engine/transmission you want in it. That is, unless the truck holds some type of sentimental value. You will (probably) save money by going that route...not to mention the headache and time spent.
Saurian, I'll have to disagree with you. Many times the engine/transmission you want might not necessarily even be a factory option. You might save money, but I think it's worth it to swap engines/trannies to get the truck you want. You gain the knowledge and experience to pass on to others, plus for most of us, it's just plain fun.
But at any rate, we do need to know more details about what kind of truck the engine/tranny is going in to lead j30 in the right direction.
I have a 96 ranger that I am turning into a show truck. I want to put in a 351w I was wondering inf the t5 from a mustang 302 would work. I know they have adapters for puting them (t-5's) into rangers with hydraulic clutches. But If the T-5 dosn't fit, is their another manual trans that would that either has hydraulic clutch or an adapter for it like the t-5 has.
The mustang t5 will bolt up, as far as it being hydraulic, you will need to get a hydraulic bellhousing. As for durability i'm not sure this trans is the best candidate but you aid it's for a show truck so that probably won't matter. For durability go with a ZF 5 speed, maybe the mazda trans will hold up in a lighter truck?
ZF S5-42, Heavy Duty aluminum housing 5 speed transmission, rated for 420ft lbs of torque, deep first gear of 5.72:1 and an OD of something like .72:1. Can be identified by the case ribbing which will run at diagonals as opposed to the mazda which looks very similar whoes case ribbings run vertical and horizontal. Can be found in either a 2wd or 4wd version and will bolt up to the 4.9L, 302, 351w and has a hydrualic clutch with a concentric slave
A ZF in a Ranger??? Thats overkill unless it is a big mud truck. Just think about trying to make that thing fit. That raises another question. Is the Ranger 4WD? If it is only 2WD that T5 should work just fine. Honestly, I would much rather have a T5 or tremec in our 2003 FX4 level 2 rather then that Mazda transmission.
In the Ranger I would stick with the T-5 or Tremec. The ZF is a big truck transmission. How long the T-5 will last depends on how well the truck hooks up.
I CAN UNDERSTAND THAT FITTING THE ZF WOULD BE TRICKY. wHAT ARE THE ACCUAL DEMENTIONS OF IT. eXTREMELY LOW FIRST GEAR HUMMM I LIKE THE SOUND OF THAT (LAWN JOBS). i WAS ORIGINALLY THINKING OF THE T-5 BUT WAS TOLD IT MIGHT NO HOLD UP, AND I HATE AUTMATICS. aLSO THERE WAS (OR IS) A MAZDA TRANS FOR THE F 150'S THAT i WAS WONDERING IF IT WAS JUNK AND IF NOT WOULD IT WORK BEHIND A 351W
Stick with the T-5 (or upgrade to a Tremec). If you use a ZF with 2wd, you need a 2 piece driveshaft. The M5OD isn't known at all for longevity, I don't think it was offered as a factory option for a 351w.
