Looked at a few more Cherokees. Went to 3 different dealers and each one had sold the one I wanted a couple of hours to a couple of days before I got there.
Now I have a chance at a Dk Blue 2000 Grand 2wd 6cyl 3spd auto and OD with 64k miles for $13500.00 thats the Total price with tax and dearler fee's. No dents or dings. Very clean.
I got til tomorrow..... What you think about the deal? Paying Cash, should I go for less money? They seem to sell quickly.
I took the advice and called the salemans made and offer of 12k... He said he could knock maybe 3 or 4 hundered off the price but that's the best he could do. He said he had to much money in it to go lower. He said he didn't make commision on the it and was sure his boss wouldn't let him go lower. I said okay, lets leave the door open a little in case either one of us changes our mind. I told him I had a few more to look at tomorrow, he quickly said he knew the other car dealer and I wouldn't get as good a deal. I pointed out the other dealer has 2001 Grand with 45k miles and $1000.00 less listed in the paper. He could see for hisself. He wished me luck. About 45 minutes later he called me back but I didn't answer. I saw his number on my caller ID. I think I'll let him stew until tomorrow evening before I return his call.
any vehicle can be reliable when its well cared for
my first vehicle was a grand (95') great vehicles even though it was VERY mistreated by a 16 yr old who thought it was a mud riding monster truck .... i will say they are very capable also ride well its not like riding in a truck cherokees and grands the seats are on the floor like a car and they handle corners nicely
only complaint i have is that the I6 is weak when it comes to towing and there is not much room inside (especailly compaired to the 1988 big bronco i drive now)
one advantage i particularly liked about the jeep i had was the solid front and rear axles i dont know when or why they stoped that
-i know im going on and on but i had the auto trany and put it through spinnin tires on concrete heavy towing and hard mud riding and it never gave me problems

I'm now looking at both Grand and Cherokee sport. Didn't buy the 00 Grand. He wouldn't come down enough on price. I like both cherokees. But the Sport looks like the engine would be easier to work on. I work in a warehouse processing the work orders every day from the sales staff so I understand profit margin. They are told to make as much as possible without losing the customer. So I'm sure car salesmans are no different. They give you a price and hope that you take it so they can brag to the boss how much money they just made. I have heard so much BS in the past week from car salesmans it makes me sick. I'm interested in one model and he tries to sell me another model $8000.00 more. "How's your credit? You can drive this one home today with low payments" Yeah low payments for 7 Years! But the best promise I heard was "if you buy this car today Steven , I will call you every year on your birthday to wish you a Happy Birthday, that's just how much I care about my customers"...
Dealing with car salesmans is why I have purchased my last 4 auto's from friends and family.

I will say this, the ride is vastly improved when they went to the unibody construction in 2001. They are still tough, and still have solid axles.
I would feel better in a vehicle with some beef underneath--I just couldn't make myself buy a unibody car. But anyway, I have a friend with an '87 Jeep Cherokee 4x4 2dr. with the 4.0L I-6, it burns oil, but at 230k, I guess that would be normal. It still runs ok, drives good, and is great for going into tight places where a pickup won't fit. It has a pretty good turn radius as well. However, I would avoid towing much with any of them. They don't like the weight too much on the rear, they will sag a lot and cause the front to be unstable.
Avoid the 2.8L V6 Jeeps at all costs, thats what my Jeepin' friends tell me.
Each one that I have looked at have the inline 6cyl. I know it's not the same but that engine reminded me of my sisters first car. A white 66' mustang 3 spd auto trans. I was only 7 yrs old in 1966 but I remember wondering where the the other half of the motor was. I would watch my brothers work on cars from time to time but never got interested in doing it myself until I was in my 20's.
The most I would tow with the jeep is about 2k lbs...
The 4.0 will be good to 3500lbs, and the 4.7 to 5500lbs.
Just about every SUV on the market is unibody, the WJ (01-04 Grand) is the closest thing to full frame rail construction, it has frame rails, and is even laddered, the only thing that makes it a unibody is that they only go to the axles.
The 2.8L V6 in the Jeeps is a GM motor. same GM problems, leaky head gaskets, bad oil cooler design.
I know it seems like this is taking for ever (Me buying a Newer Auto) but I'm in no hurry! If I didn't say, This will be the first time I have ever owned a vehicle that wasn't already 10 to 12 yrs old when I got it. And I'm 45 yrs old.
Now I have found a 99' Explore 4x4 4dr with 62k miles on it. For $11000.00
160 hp I was told, that seems low to me. Not sure of the size of the motor.
I've got a 1999 GMC Jimmy 4-dr 4x4 w/4.3 Vortec and have nothing bad to say about it after 68K miles. At 45K I replaced an idler pulley ($25) and at 62K I replaced the right front hub unit ($165), of course doing the R&Rs myself. That's it for repairs. It gets 20-22 mpg and 15 mpg when I use it to tow my trailered trail beater to distant meets....my F-250 only gets 7 mpg pulling the trailer on the interstates.
It rides great and handles good after getting rid of the stock BFGs and opting for MasterCraft AWTs. I have had absolutely no trim, paint or other stated problems beyond what I mentioned above and would highly recommend it to others who might be in the market for a non-FoMoCo SUV. I might mention that it's the oddball ride in my "fleet." I have the F-250, a Ranger 4x4, two B2 4x4s and my daily driver is an '89 Festy....can't beat that 47 mpg.
That's awesome (47mpg) on the Festy...I've got a 91 and 92 - both are 5-spds with A/C. The best I've managed is 41mpg. Of course I drive them at 75-80mph too - YES...they can go that fast
62k miles sure seems a little premature for hub assy. replacements...
