I am trying to replace the timing belt on my sisters 93 Chrystler LeBaron. I cannot seem to break loose the bolt on the crankshaft dammper. I have tried using an impact gun. I also tried using a pry bar to hold the timing gear on the crank while my brother tried to break it loose with a breaker bar, but no luck. I think I am going to remove the starter, hold the fly wheel with a pry bar, and then have my brother try to break it loose. Does this sound like a good way to break it loose? Any and all advice is welcomed. Thanks.
Yeah, I've had to remove starters and jam the flywheel/flexplate before so it's worth a try. Also, is there any remote chance the bolt has a reverse thread?
the bolt should unsrew the oppisite direction the engine turns(to keep it from backing out) a trick we used to do on the taurus and rangers was to put a big breaker bar on the bolt and wedge it against the frame or something that would not move, and crank the engine(with the ignition disabled of course) and the starter would break the bolt lose
Hmm... ya, that sounds pretty dangerous. Sounds like it would work, but I dont know that I would recommend that. I know on the Ranger, I had to grasp the harmonic balancer w/ a large pipe wrench w/ a sissy bar to the ground then a large breaker bar on the bolt it's self. Perhaps this could work for you?? If not, how about blocking both sides of the wheels and putting the vehicle in gear, then try to break the bolt?? Hope this helps.
i seriously advise against the breaker bar in the engine while turning it over...that could get ugly quick....i would do as said here before use a peice of pipe to make the leverage stronger and hope for the best
