With the build of my new 400, I would like to stray from using the stock balancer being it is in poor condition (grenade!). I intend to have the rotating assy. balanced. What have anyone's experiences been with selecting harmonic balancers/dampeners? I hear mixed reviews about fluidampr, and on this particular forum I recall a user having an experience where two very similar 400s with different balancers affected main bearing life in 2 different ways. Now, who wants to add their 2 cents?
I have heard that you can get reman dampers but I have not been able to track down a source, -just hearsay everywhere. My own damper is in bad shape but I picked up a 28 oz fluidamper to use cheap if I had to. I could remove the weight and balance to 0 but from what I understand the crank takes special heavy inserts in it to balance to zero.
I am running a professional products SFI powerforce plus dampner, I spin it over 7k it balanced real well, and the weight is removable so you can zero balance it or replace it with a 50oz if you want to put it on another engine like a late model 5.0, and yes the balancers are the same as mine says for early SB, ford, and I run it on a 351c. and it seems to be a very well built balancer.
BTW I have run the fluid dampners also, and it worked fine but they are very expensive, and have heard that they aren't as good as one listed above after 7000rpm, so it's on a friends 347
When I did my rebuild I researced this extensively because of all the different opinions I was getting. I did not want to blow it with the wrong damper. The concensus I got was that fluid type dampers are great for upper rpm performance and keeping the engine smooth as long as the truck is driven frequently and if your willing to replace it in a couple of years. The silicone will begin to solidify over time especially in an occasional driver, thus putting you out of balance once this happens. This was confirmed to me by aftermarket retailers. The sfi certified dampers are the way to go if you plan on living life alot above 5000rpm. Make sure what you buy does specifically include the 351m/400, as some companies I ran into would not verify the fit. It seems their books are very inconsistant on the application,
Id like to be able to touch the 5500 - 6 realm with the 400. Above that would be unnecessary with my build. The truck will be a part time driver so that was handy info about the solidification of the silicone. The powerforce plus do not seem to include the 351/400 specifically but do i understand monsterbaby correctly to say that the ones intended for 351 windsors are a fit?
I don't know if it is for a 351w it just says SB ford on the box, but the part number is 90006, and is what I am using on my 351c. below is a link to one on ebay, can't remember if this is who I got mine from but, it is there none the less. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33616
Has anyone here tried the balancer sold by Advance auto? It's made by Pioneer products, and for $68, seems awfully inexpensive. Opinions?
sounds really cheap as in knock off of a stock replacement, I don't think I would trust it over 4500rpm, although if it truly is made by pioneer they have a pretty good name, but remember the saying you get what you pay for, although I don't think that is necessarily true as I don't think I need a 450 balancer, but at that price it should be considered a stock one, and driven like it.
im not gonna race this truck or anything, so 4500-5000 would be the MAX i would push this engine anyways. i've looked around since reading your post, and found a few others for right about 100. Pioneer Products DA3512 is the part at Advance. I can't locate the actual Pioneer site to see if they have any additional information about their balancers.
Yes, according to CHP's site, 90006 is the one (28 oz). Also intended for windsor strokers up to 427 so i imagine it will handle the harmonics of the 400. Seems I opened up alot of discussion with this one, thanks!
