Question Help me get started please

hey, im a 17 year old who would like to start building my dream truck but i have many decisions to make on parts and mods.(do keep in mind my teenage budget because i work for everything i get and 'mommy and daddy' aren't paying for any of my truck parts.) im building a 77 crew cab/w 8ft box.
Q#1: i have a dana 60 front and dana 70 rear/w 4:10 ratio. should i stay low or go high with like 3:54?
Q#2: i got a set of 44's(yea, i know, im one of those "damn kids") what lift should i go with? how much suspension and how much body?
Q#3: for my dana 70 rear, should i put a Detroit Locker in it, leave it alone, or something else? same question for my dana 60 front.
Q#4: i hear all this stuff about NP205 transfer cases. should i go with one of those or something else? divorced or married to the tranny?
Q#5: i have a 460 police interceptor. good idea or bad idea? if not such a good idea, what motor should i go with?(big block of course)

the only thing i know for certain is im going with a 4 speed.

thank you for your help.

what kind of shape is your truck in now? that is the big question. does it run, does it drive, or what would it take to get it running and driving.

stock is the easiest and cheapest thing to do, especially if you are on a buget!

the body is ok, but the truck completely gutted out mechanically speaking. just a frame with all my stuff like my motor, tires, and axles are in a nearby shed.

Welcome to the forum.
As far as the 4.10 gears, I would stick with those if you are going to run 44" tires.
The 460 would be a great engine for a 4x4. Lot's of torque.

Need to know how you plan to use your truck. And be honest. Is it gonna be a pretty freeway flyer, or a mud slingin beast?

The NP 205 is a part time 4x4 transfer case. The NP 203 transfer case is full time 4x4.

The 205 is stronger, because it is all gear driven, rather than the chain driven 203.

A married case is ideal, you will have less flex in the drivetrain, but its one less thing to break.

Lockers are fun to deal with.

I can't imagine this is gonna be your daily driver, it won't get better than 4-6 MPG.

i odnt want to go jung-ho one way or the other. id like to have a good balance between off-road ability and highway drivability, if that's possible.

you won't have any driveability with 44" tires... nobody makes a DOT approved 44" tire anyway, so you couldn't legally drive it.

I have 31" tires on my truck now, it goes anywhere I point it. It has no lift but quad front shocks...it rubs only on hard left turns...

i see, i might consider tonning down my tire size. the reason i got them was because they were dirt cheap.

44" Swamper TSL's and Boggers are DOT approved as well as 44" Hawgs (which actually measure 41-42"). The IROK 49" are DOT approved as are the 53" Michelin XZL's. As far as drivability that all depends on what you consider drivable.

You will need lower gearing than 4.10's with 44" tires though or you'll really lug your engine down. Try 4.88's or 5.13's.

4.10s are MINIMUM- but OK to start with; I would recommend smaller tires. 44s are nice, but for your only vehicle and wanting some drivability, 37-39" tires would be much more practical and still look good. You could sell the 44s to a mud bogger or save them for another time...
The 205 is a great choice for T-C; stay with a 460- that is a good choice for a truck that will be pushing 7000 lbs; Married transfer case as stated earlier; Open is fine unless you really wheel hard- then start with just a rear Detroit ($pendy on a D70) Leave the front open unless you start rolling in cash, then an ARB is a good choice. Put a Detroit Locker in the front axle of a crewcab, and you will need the proverbial 40 acres to turn around in in 4WD...

ARB, OX, and the Electrac or electric lockers are selectable lockers- they can be switched between open and locked. $spendy, but nice, especially for front ends. The ARB is air operated (requires compressor), the OX is cable actuated, and the elctrac is- you guessed it- electrically actuated by a solenoid. I believe only the ARB is available currently for the D60.

The detroit is always a locker- it will always be locked unless turning and ratcheting. The selectables can be left open until you need them.
