i have a 302 engine out of an old mustang and a T5 tranny, and i am having trouble finding a clutch to use, it eiter works witht the tranny, and not the flywheel or the flywheel and not the tranny, i either neet to find a clucht that works r a new flywheel and ican barley find either
Greg, we'll need more info. What year 302? What did the T5 come from?
Basically the clutch plate needs to fit the tranny input shaft. The pressure plate needs to match the flywheel. As long as they are both the same outside diameter I can't remember why they wouldn't work.
302's changed imbalance in '81. T5's vary input shaft size even among Ford applications - between V8 and 4 bangers.
the T5 is from a early 90's thunderbird, and the 302 is out of a 66 mustang, i am having problems finding a clutch that will work with the t5 that will bolt on to the currrent flywheel, so i either need a new flywheel or a new clutch, both of which im having problems finding
I'm not trying to be a smart elbow, but the clutch plate is the thin disk that floats between the flywheel and the pressure plate. It doesn't bolt to anything, but just spins with the input shaft of the transmission.
You need to use the flywheel and pressure plate that came with the engine or one that has the same bolt pattern.
You should use the clutch disk that was with the transmission. As long as it is the same diameter as the pressure plate or slightly smaller it should work.
OR is the problem with having a 14.25" flywheel and only room in the T5 bellhousing for the 13.25" flywheel? 302's used both sizes. It can be hard to find the small one with the right imbalance (28 oz for a pre-81 302), but your machine shop should be able to adjust the balance for you. Some of the speed shops sell flywheels for both weights in both sizes. Check with Speedway or Jegs.
If none of this makes sense you might want to ask this question on the engine swap forum. The guys there may be able to explain it to you better than I can.
the problem is finding a slipbearing, i think tats what its called, that works with the clutch and the realease opn the tranny,
i am having trouble finding a clutch that has a bearin the right size to work with the cluch and the tranny.
so i need to find a bearing, which they dont make ior are imposible to find, or i need to find a slipplate houseing that will bolt onto the flywheel that has a bearing that works with the release on the tranny.
You need to pull the casting number off of your engine to see what you really have..... They didn't start making a 302 until '68, so if it's in a '66, it was swapped in.
If I remember right, it's on the side of the block around the starter.
The code on the engine block will be a letter, a number, a number then a letter.
The first 2 are the most important to you.
The first letter: c-1960's
d-1970's
e-1980's
The second digit "number" will be the year, ie. 1=61 or 71 or 81, 6=66 or 76 etc.
You really need to know exactly what you have or you may rattle the motor apart from being imbalanced incorrectly (??)
I went through the same thing putting a toploader behind my 351 W
