I currently have a Y tube leak. I had it at one dealership 3 times and they REFUSED to acknowlege it was there. I showed them the soot on the firewall, the puffs of smoke, etc. It took the second dealership 10 minutes to figure it out. It goes in next week for repair.

If you go to a dealership, Tell them to look up SSM # 17774 it tells them to replace the "Y" pipe for an exhaust leak.

A word of caution, for sake of your warranty---if the dealer finds out about the Six gun and the disassebmly, they WILL NOT pay for the y-pipe and they WONT cover an engine claim in the future should anything ever happen. It would be in your best interest go to the parts department at a dealership you don't often visit, order the entire y-pipe assembly, and install it yourself, even if it costs you a couple hundred bucks. Once you have drilled and tap the exhaust manifold they are going to know what is going on when they see it, and you need to watch it.

Honesty is the best policy, I agree, but don't volunteer that kind of information!

I noticed the dreaded hissing last Friday. Actually I thought I ran over something and punctured the left front tire. Saturday I located the hiss by using a small piece of pipe I held to my ear while crawling around under the truck. It was the y pipe at the exhaust manifold. Took it in Monday, supposed to get it back today. I'm having a few routine maint. things done also. But seeing where the y pipe is located, I can understand why it's a time comsuming replace.

I just talked to the svc mgr at my dealership. The adapter on the y pipe is what cracked on mine. Started out smelling diesel fumes in the cab, started hissing when it cracked and gave up. He says getting it all to line up and mate properly is critical, or it will just start the problem over again. Just food for thought

In case anyone tries to decide to change it themselves, I just thought I would provide a helpful peice of information. If you want to go to the trouble, you can put a support under the bell housing on the transmission, break the transmission bell housing loose from the back of the engine, loosen and remove the engine mounting bolts, and use a hoist, cherry picker, wrecker, ect. to move the engine forward about 6 inches from its mounts (Dont forget to remove the clamp from the top of the exhaust downpipe) It will move back and forth, however do not overdo it or you are liable to break lines, pinch wires, or other such problems. This would provide several additional inches of working space to get to the y-pipe, which can be critical in such confinded spaces. If I am thinking right, however, you will need a new rear seal.

jb racing thats the same thing that was wrong with mine.
psd 60 fx4 that sounds like alot of work..... it took me about 6 hours to r & r the y pipe in my drive way on ramps.i had to get the wife to help (my son wasnt around) i had to take the exhaust dowm from the turbo and the inercooler pipe for elbo room.but with a little farting and fanagaling i got the parts off and back on. oh i had to take the right intermediate pipe off as well.the y pipe comes out the right side in the same space the down pipe uses. the parts guy at the dealer said they would give me $$back (for the part) if it became a warrenty issue.it has seemed to have lost alot of turbo lag ,the cab doesn"t smell and my feet dont roast....
thanks all i hope the info helps. if you can get the dealer to do it LET them!!!!!!!!!!

The other option (apparently very popular with mechanics) is a body lift. I am told it is the easiest way to get the space you need to work on it. Also saves your paint from having someone leaning over the fenders.
