I have a 97 f150 with 4.6. Just hit 200,000 miles. Just had the alternator rebuilt, and 2 u-joints put on. Got everything back together. Now the check engine light is flashing, and it seems to be missing or trying to cut out at idle and as I give it gas. Could it be a spark plug wire, fuel filter. Need help.
The spark plug design is not good. I suggest you purchase or go to Autozone and get the OB11 scanned. I have a 98 and have had to address the number 4 plug many times. Rear plug passenger side.
I changed the rear passenger side spark plug and wire. Changed the oil filter, changed the fuel filter. Started it up, big puff of smoke, still does the same thing, maybe worse. The CEL light starts to blink at me when I hit about 50mph. Do you think it is okay to drive to work. I do not have an autozone within 50 miles. Any other quick cheap things I can check before I take it to the dealer. I keep thinking I did something when I changed the alternator, maybe? Thanks for any help in advance.
The manual says not to drive with blinking light. When my wire miss fired it blinked and I drove about 10 miles. You can pull off each wire and inspect the connection on each boot. The OB11 will tell you exactly what the problem is. My bet is it is a wire. I have replaced mine twice. Moisture develops in the well and causes the problem. Infact the connection on the number 4 wire rotten off it was so bad.
Good Luck
Your engine is missing if you have a timing light you can hook it up to each wire and point it at the top of the hood or somewhere flat where you can see and it should flash in a quick pattern if when you find a cylinder with an irregular pattern first check the wire see if anything is obvious then replace the plug and re test.
Having a diagnostic scanner makes life so much easier i think i would have pulled my hair out with out it. I have see cylinders miss but not set a check engine light so i would just try the timing light method.
got it fixed. Took to midas, they read the codes. Mis fire in #5 cylinder. Pun new plug plus wire. Had moisture down in the well and on the old wire boot. Runs great now. Thanks for all the help.
That's Great. I hate to say it but you will have trouble again. You should make a sketch of the cylinder numbers and buy OB11 scanner. I have aa Actron cp9135. I think Autozone or Pepboys sells it now for $99.00. It is worth evy $$.
