Im out to check out a 91 ranger tomorrow for $1300. Its the odd 2.3l with the dual spark splugs, 100,000 miles, 2wd and a 5 speed. Has anyone had any problems with these, what should i expect, what kinda gas mileage, so on and so forth. Im headed out tomorrow to take a look so just wanna know what to expect. Thank you very much!
Just look for the usual signs of wear, front tires, arm rest, pedal pads.
A service history would be good.
Take note of any type of trailor hitch. That & rear spring sag would tell you about the work loads the truck has seen.
25+ mpg.
AL.
I have the same truck but with 240k miles on it. no problems other than routine maintance parts (plug wires and timing belt). its an awesome truck but remember it it is a 4 banger so don't expect the power of the 3.0 or 4.0, but non the less its been a great truck. mine gets 24-25mpg, but since that truck only has 100k on it more like 26-27mpg if it has been properly cared for. good luck!
thank you for those quick replies! but actually found a '93 today for $1700 with 100k on it. It just gives me this error when i plug the engine checker in "distributorless ignition system, loss of dual plug inhibit (DPI) control. and erratic IDM input to processor, it idles a little rough, when i give it gas and let go itll bog down for a couple of seconds, but it revs perfect. other than that it is perfect. and it starts without a hitch like that, so the compression seems good. any ideas guys?
DIS problems can cost a lot of money to fix and with the other problems mentioned, IMHO, its not worth $1700. I would go with the '91, BTW did you pull the codes on it?
I had no problems wth my '91 Ranger (2.3 litre 5 sp). Sold it at 103000 miles. The build quality on that truck was a lot better than my current '04 Ranger. Aside from regular maintenance (eg, fluid changes/gaskets), I only had to replace the O2 sensor and the clutch.
turns out the coil wasnt the only problem, engine light kept coming on, troubleshooted it to a module, even though autozone said it was good, put the new one in, and no more light! perfect. Thanks for all your input!
